: Martacking with Lunchbox lockers
wilburburns 12-28-2004, 11:10 AM OK, I'm putting a set of locked FJ40 axles in my Zuk. I am considerring Martacking the axles and removing the inner CirClip on the Birf for easier trail replacement. However, I think I read somewhere that it was not necessary to Martack the inner shafts, if a Lunchbox Locker (Detroit EZ, or LockRight) was installed in the Diff. Is this correct? I have either a Detroit EZ, or Lockright in both front and rear Thirds. It doesn't seem as though, the shaft could slide inward at all, but I could be wrong.
So, what's the skinny on Martacking FJ Axles???
BTW: I did search, but did not come up with great info... Also, I originally posted this in the Zuk forum, but someone mentioned I might get quicker responses here, since they are Cruiser Axles..
Thanks
Cliff
woody 12-28-2004, 11:20 AM the primary reason for martak's is to keep the inner axle from sliding too far into the axle housing and allowing the sealing surface of the shaft to pass inside the seal, allowing the gear lube and trunion grease to intermix.
Take the bare inner, shove it in there...it the seal surface contacts, then don't sweat it. The spline contact difference in the birf is minimal. I've never run martak's, and never had seal or inner axle issues (busted birfs, newfs, and longs are another story....)
Pin Head 12-28-2004, 01:34 PM I did the tack on mine because they could slide in far enough to miss the seal surface. Install the locker first and use the tape trick or fill the splines with grease to locate where to put the tack. The lenght of the LR splines are not the same as the side gears, so you don't want to go by the wear pattern on the spline.
Boston Mangler 12-28-2004, 03:51 PM Anyone know if this method is needed when running longs and pig shafts with an elocker?
woody 12-28-2004, 04:22 PM pigs have a longer sealing surface than stockers.
I do no tacking with my pigs and old longs, and won't with my new 4340 ones either...lunchbox front locker.
Best bet, test fit.

Cool, so i am in the clear and shouldnt have leaks???? I already assembled everything before hearing about the Martack thing!
turbo4runner 12-28-2004, 06:11 PM If you havn't heard about martacking you have been on the DARK side far to long glad you are back.
Boston Mangler 12-28-2004, 06:43 PM Very True My Friend!
Should i be ok with my setup ya think?
woody 12-29-2004, 05:07 AM I'm ok with it....can't imagine why you wouldn't be.... :flipoff2:
wilburburns 12-29-2004, 07:19 AM Thanks guys for the info...
I'll be checking the Inners and Seal this week. With any luck, I won't have to Martack the axles...
Time to get out the 1.5" Pipe and get the Birf off the Inner Axle...
If my budget would allow, I would definetely get new longs and Pigs inners and not worry about it again... But that's not an option currently..

Cool, Thanks!
Eskimo 12-29-2004, 10:17 AM never needed it on my front diff.

If you still have the inner c clip on the birf, then you won't need the martac. The Martac basically replaces the inner clip.
