: Heres one for all of you IH guru's
Trickranger618 12-29-2004, 09:18 AM I have recently come across a 74 jeep cj5 second hand. However im not sure which motor it actually has in it. What are the identifying marks that i can tell exactly what size the motor is. The guy I bought it from was the 345 but id like to be sure since he wasnt the one that put it in
CSmith 12-29-2004, 10:19 AM Are you trying to say your Jeep has an International engine in it? The engine size is stamped on a pad on the engine block right above the fuel pump.
Binder 12-29-2004, 10:51 AM Does it say "international" in big letters on the valve covers? That would be a good place to start.
orangeamcs 12-29-2004, 11:09 AM Jeep motors have siamesed exhaust ports like a sbc and have the distributot up front at an angle. Also the v8 amc will have the c.i. on the side under the motor mount. it could be a 290 304 343 360 390 401 maybe even a old ass 327 amc.
matt
Trickranger618 12-29-2004, 11:48 AM it is an International Motor. It does say International in big bright letters on the valve covers. Thats why I posted in this forum. I couldn't see any stampings around the fuel pump. Is there anything else that could help me tell which motor it is? Thanks again for all the help.

It's there, but hard to find. The stamp in on the block under the front side of the passenger's side head. The alternator is usally in front of it. On an some IH's the easiest way to see if it look up through the passenger's side wheel well, but on a jeep????
CSmith 12-29-2004, 12:06 PM Sometimes the engine size is also stamped on the throttle return spring bracket.
Trickranger618 12-29-2004, 12:34 PM i think i found it i can make out 4 and 5 sitting at an angle so i would say that it is the 345. thanks again for all the help :D
Mechanos 12-29-2004, 01:21 PM It will say V345 E (for example if it's a emissions version 345) and will also have a serial number stamped on the pad as well. Make sure you're reading the size and not part of the serial #
Creepy196 12-29-2004, 01:47 PM Take off a valve cover. The displacement is cast into the top of the heads (at least on the V8s I've worked on).
A Binder in a Heep...That's something you don't see every day. I have a spare 152/T90/D18 package that I may stick into an old flatfender if one ever comes my way. Oh crap!!! Not another project!
slipscomb 12-29-2004, 04:13 PM One of the easiest ways to determine whether you have a 345 or 304 is place your thumb and pinky on the back valley pan bolts opposing each other. This is the pan that is bolted under the intake. You can easily do this with room to spare on a 304 but you will have to stretch to do this on a 345 (unless, of course you have really BIG hands).
Urban Wheeler 12-29-2004, 04:14 PM One other thing, the 345 has a taller deck height, so the distance between the valve covers will be greater than on a 304. Roughly I can touch an intake bolt on each side at the same time with my thumb and pinky for a 304, but not on a 345.

Beat ya by 1 minute! :D :bounce2:
Chief yelling alot 01-02-2005, 11:59 PM I have 2 sets of SV valvecovers that dont have "international" stamped in them
tsm1mt 01-03-2005, 10:13 AM The throttle return bracket is a poor way to determine engine size.. if it's accurate, I have an IC345. :flipoff2:
Even easier than the valley measurement with the thumb n' finger.. look at the bypass hose up front, coming out of the water pump and into the thermostat housing.
Is it just barely enough for a 90-deg elbow, or does it come up a little first, then bend?
If you can barely fight the bugger on, it's a 266/304, if it's a little taller/longer, it's a 345/392.

The other easy way is to snap some digital pics...email them to me or post them up yourself...Let us look at them, and then file away into our archives.
Sounds very interesting to say the least. :)
