They get dirt in the switch contact area. Try spraying the hinge area where the switch is with an electrical spray cleaner. Here in Nevada where there is lots of dirt its an ongoing problem. Ford fawked up when they made that switch design.

I have a 99 ranger that has the exact problem I took my switch out brushed it and silicone sprayed it TWICE both times it would work for about a month I finally unpluged it :D maybe not what you wanted to hear but you really can't spray them good from the hinge

$12.00 switches at the dealer if WD40 or other lube won't free 'em up. Pain in the butt to get to them the first couple of times, they are in the latch itself, not anywhere near the hinge (on a SuperDuty or Excursion, anyway). Once you figure them out, they aren't too bad, though. You can change them without removing the latch completely. So pull the door panel, probably driver front first, it gets the most use. trace the wires back, there are two switches in the latch, one for the door lights, the other for the power locks. If I remember right, it is the lower switch, with purple & pink wires. Hardest part is getting the connector off, it has a clip that's kinda tough to get to. After that, though, just twist the switch with a pair of pliers to remove, then install new one in reverse. Below are pics, left side are passenger, right side are drivers. The only difference between them is the nub sticking out that locks them in place. My bad one was the driver side rear door, changed out the front first, though

Thank ya.....now what is the trick to getting the door panels off Without fucking them up?

And what about the back barndoors and hatch, together there are 3 more latches..........I'm thinking that is my culprit. Any way to test these little bastids?

Pull the plastic corner piece in front and above the door panel straight back along window, it has three little pressure fasteners that will give when you exert enough force. same thing with the plastic housing for all the switches, just pry it straight up. There are two screws, one under the switch housing, and the other under the reflector/light lense at the bottom corner. once you remove these, lift straight up on the door panel and it will slide off, then feed the switch housing through the hole to completely remove it.

I tried to figure out a way to test them still connected, but since 1 will backfeed the rest, it didn't work to good. Might try unplugging them one at a time till you find one that shuts it off. PIA

Did you try spraying lube into the latch assembly itself? Usually that will work quite well at freeing them up.
