: New to IH ??s
I am usually a jeep guy so this IH stuff is foregin to me... I have searched the subject and just thought i would start a post.
I have found a 1971 Scout 800B that a friend has in his driveway. It probably hasn't been started in about 6-8mnths. It has probably only moved a total of 3miles in the last 5 years. Basically It looks to be in good shape with very minimal rust. (Texas)... I was thinkning of picking it up for a winter/spring project to give to my Dad upon comlpletion. I'm fairly sure that I could get it for next to nothing. This won't be a serious weeler at all...
I was just looking for opinions from the IH guys on this year and model... It has a v-8 and an auto.. I will inspect futher but for now that is about all I know about it.
Thanks,
trey
Gen. Nonsense 12-30-2004, 03:07 PM best place to start for your basic q's isThe Binder Bulletin (http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/). Pretty descent place for basic tech, and quite a few of us frequent that board. Have fun with the new project.

Will look over there as well...

I would love to have a V-8/auto 800!!
Or just the body on my SII frame!!
IHScoutman14 12-30-2004, 05:26 PM that year had a BW tranny i believe...

Should be the same as the ford FMX.
IIRC the B had the 30 spline 44 rear
Thanks for the Info... Keep it coming...
More Questions....
I haven't crawled under it yet but would it be likely to have the 44 front?
Is the Auto worth a shit?
THanks,
Trey

Not a stock front 44.
I always liked the BW/FMX. it is heavy with a cast iron case.
but if you felt inclined, you could pull it out like a 4 speed and leave the bell and TC on the engine.
At least on the fords you could!
I know B&M had a good transpak for it. used to bark second at will. :D
Do some google on it and see what you come up with.
Try FMX and Borg warner.

Hell....

what does it matter.
Engine would be either a 266 or a 304 V-8 (IH motors, not AMC stuff)
Tranny would BW unit as mentions. Although you could swap in an IH 727 out of a later SII if you wanted.
T-case will most likely be a Dana 20.
Rear axle will be a D44, maybe 30-spline, maybe 19. Could be flanged or the earlier (and weaker) tapered. If it truly is a '71 800B, then probably a flanged 30-spline unit (similar, but slightly narrower than a SII unit)
Front axle could be a D30, or D27, most likely a D30. Close knuckle though, drum-brake.
Sounds like a good deal if you like the styling. I like both Scout II's and the earlier 80/800's for different reasons, so its all personal preference. Just like all old 4x4s (or cars/trucks for that matter) they will have there quirks and problems. Parts are available, but they are not always easy. Parts houses are fun, but allot of parts are there, you just have to be smarter than the counter monkey.
The drive-train could be swapped out, if you wanted. But really no need unless your going to build the crap out of it. The IH V-8's are damn good motors if they have been taken care of. The tranny is good. The rear is good, if you can find parts. Turning radius would be sharper in the front if you swapped in an open knuckle unit, and disc brakes are always nice, but not required. PS wasn't an option, but there are ways to ads it. PB also weren't an option, but a good manual system should be sufficient, but power can be adapted if you desired. Search to find those options.
Sounds like a good solid starting point, and if this is going to be for your dad sounds like more of a rebuild/restore/driver than hard-core wheeler. The aforementioned Binder Bulletin is going to be your best resource.

Hell.... Could be civilized people who have trucks that run and drive off road are taking over from the jack stand wheelers with bad attitudes that can't do anything but bitch and chase away viewers!
Ever wonder why this section is struggling for a decent high tech off road thread?

You consider this a high tech thread :shaking:
Gen. Nonsense 01-01-2005, 07:02 PM Ever wonder why this section is struggling for a decent high tech off road thread? I'll tell ya why...Threads like this. There is nothing in this thread that is high tech or off-road related.
Not to bash on YYYJ or any thing but people get tired of seeing the same dumbass questions asked over and over. A simple thread or google search would have netted him the results he needed.

I agree !
Hey Jeremy when do you think I can get my jack stands back ? :flipoff2:

Unless it's been retro-graded, it'll be a flanged 30spl D44, WMS 56.75" (SII=58"). Front D30 (same ends as D27).
Hey Jeremy when do you think I can get my jack stands back ? :flipoff2:
His Scout changed jackstands yesterday :flipoff2:
Oh yeah, the BW used by IH is visually the same as Ford FMX, but different internally. Some people have experienced problems getting parts for the IH version.
Ronnie :)

:flipoff2: At the rate I'm going, never!
For the people that provided tech... Thanks very much...
For the people that bitched... If you don't like it then why waste your time replying?
Urban Wheeler 01-02-2005, 06:46 PM I'm not bitching, I'm glad to have new threads to read.
