Call me an idiot, but what keeps the axle c-clips in place? Is there a recess in the side gears that holds 'em in there once that sleeve around the crosspin spreads the axles apart?
Inquiring minds want to know...

They are recessed into the side gears...Are you sure the oil just doesn't have them sucked into place?

That makes sense, that would expain why you have to push the axleshafts in a little (once the crosspin is removed) to get the c-clips out. They'd fall out going down the road otherwise.
Which would be quite exciting, come to think of it.

Yep, recessed slightly into the gear. That's why center pin spacer
must be removed and axel pushed in to remove c-clip. Once the axel is pushed in they just fall out.
