this is a for my neigbor. she wanted me to make a knife for her husband after she saw some of my work.So in essence this is a gift for both of them as i am not charging her for the work :D Its a 440 stainless blade as he is not a real "knife care" guy and wanted to give him something simple to own. its also chizel edged so its esy for him to keep sharp. aluminum bolsters and granite Coreon(sp) scales.
i will post up a couple more once i stop having upload problems

you make that from scratch?

yes. i copied the blade style(sorta) from a cheap folder that she liked the rough shape of. The only bitch was getting the stupid thumb hole to come out right :shaking: i would have rather threaded it for a stud.

Hey that's a nice one. Good work, I like the handle quite a bit.
i love working in the solid counter top material :D you can sand it to a satin finish or buff the fawk out of it like i did

usmcdoc14
12-31-2004, 02:55 PM
Damn that's impressive. What tools do you use to machine the blade?

belt sander. anything else will make your life suck realy bad  you leave a "handle" on the blade blank or weld a rod to the end so you have something good to hold on to when grinding the angles.
The trick to grinding good blade angles is not to think and stay commited. once you start and angle DONT STOP. wait untill the grind is done and then work from there

and then buff

and buff

and buff

and fawking buff some more

How do you make the blade?

I will say it looks better than the Gerber that's in my pocket.

usmcdoc14
12-31-2004, 03:15 PM
Okay - I have to ask...

How do you make the blade?

buy steel of the variety you want from a metal supply or off ebay (great sorce for small pieces of exotic steels)

take a sharpie and draw the rough 2d shape of the blade on the steel and grind it like 1/16 oversize.

Make another one cause you will fuck up your first one :flipoff2:

using a stationary belt sander using no rougher than 120grit paper (use NEW for each side) unless you have a vise to hold your angles then you can start rough and work finer. grind your blade bevels DONT TRY TO SHARPEN IT that is the last step. remember you only want to bevel half the blade thickness so visualy make sure.
90% of what i do is by eye as i am much more acurate than by measure.

flip and do other side.
another option is to use a end mill and a milling machine. much easier

grid the rest of the blade shape and remove the "handle" that you had attached to do the grinding. drill and tap all needed holes

put a ROUGH sharpend edge on it

temper the steel (you look this up for the rockwell required for your use and the type of steel and what shit you have available to temper it)

polish like a motherfucker remebering NOT to over heat the metal and lose your temper. also polish away from an edge so you dont launch a blade into your leg when it catches the buffing wheel :shaking: ask me how i know
polish polish polish
even if you are putting a satin finish
polish
leave polished or bead blast for a satin finish or for moly coating
TAAADAAAAA

you have a blade :flipoff2:

11* razor blade. sharp as fawk basicly what is called "a wire"

15* wood carving blades or trout knives

19* fillet or boning knives

22* kitchen knives and high end shit. caping knives, pocket knives that dont see abuse

total maybe 14. it would go a LOT quicker if i had a small mill or a drill press that could handle a cutter. It actualy takes less time to do stuff in all steel as aposed to aluminum. i have to stop and let the work cool because of the heat transfer of aluminum.

in other words i burn my fawking hands when machining it :flipoff2: so i stop and have a Mt Dew and a smoke...

this takes up a good portion of my time :D

usmcdoc14
12-31-2004, 09:48 PM
yes, there is (or used to be) a clamp that attached to the backbone of the blade that would control the angle as you used a whet stone. you would just let the clamp "skim" across the stone as you sharpend

i will look for it

wow thats awesome, kudos on the great work it looks like it came from the CRKT factory or something. i once used the tig to heat the crap out of a piece of steel and pound it into a knife shape. then i got a book on forgeing and wanted to stab myself for being stupid enough to use mild steel :)

i have an old manual surface grinder thats in very good condition, i might try and make some stuff like this some day, do you think a surface grinder would come in handy?

usmcdoc14
01-01-2005, 12:31 PM
yes if set up right making the bevels would be simple.

and suck less :D

I just want to pick up a well used bridgeport and set it up with some simple digital readouts and go at it. I used to "trade" time at a shop,i would work on jobs one day and the next day was mine to do whatever. So i would set up the miller and cut knife blanks all day.

I was making a killing just doing custom blades :D

I've got a two tiered system for sharpening my knives. First, I'll use a lansky or gatco type shapener to set the angle. Then for the final hone I'll use a spyderco sharpmaker to really get a razor edge. The first step is to set the angle more acute than the spyderco sharpener, otherwise you'll be dragging the edge across the ceramic stones for hours. The spyderco sharpener is where its at though. The lansky will only get the edge decently sharp where the spyderco will get it breathtakingly sharp.

My friend sent me two knives to sharpen and when he got them back he was so impressed by how sharp I got them he immediately wanted to know where to order the sharpeners. These sharpeners are easy to use too, anybody can do it. The spyderco one will sharpen serrated blades too.

I've been wanting a good folding blade for quite a while, and I have a brother who is a cop and I'd like to buy him one for his birthday (next December!) So if you are seriously keeping a waiting list for blades, I would like to be on it x2. It would be great to buy an American made, handmade knife.

As for sharpening, having earned my way through a few years of college shearing Christmas trees each summer I can tell you that the most important things about sharpening are time, patience and a good two grit stone, minimum. With the time and the patience, you will develop the skill to get a good edge.

Nice knife.
There are some old timers in my area that have forges and like to make knives.
They generally use heavy truck leaf springs.

The problem is that some of those springs are already cracked internally.
They hammer and forge it, then use it a few times and it breaks.
It is still cool to see their handy work.

We used to sneak and make knives on the belt sanders at the place I used to work. Files make excellent blades, but I have been very happy with the two I made from a power hacksaw blade. Talk about holding an edge, it has to be some of the best steel I've ever seen.
