: tranny problem?

Doin a little wrenchin on the truck this weekend (83 GMC 3/4 ton) and noticed that the tranny (700R4) seems to be acting up? (I've only had the truck for a couple of days).

Anyway, when I first start it in the morning (once I get it started, carb troubles) and get going, the tranny seems to be "indecisive" about going into OD. Back and forth, back and forth, but once it warms up it's a "little" better, but not great. It just seems rather inclined to do it's own thing.

Anyway, any ideas? I was gonna start with a fluid/filter change, and see where that takes me. Anything else I should look for?

Oh yea, by chance, could this be related to carb troubles? The carb doesn't idle for shit, and the choke is a POS. I've got a quadrajet off of a 76 that I rebuilt about 5 years ago and stuck it in a box, and am just considering putting that on instead of fiddling with what's on there. Obviously though, the rochester on there now has SEVERAL more vacuum ports, etc, etc coming out of it, but since we don't have inspection here in Indiana, I'm pulling all that shit off.

Anyway, I guess the other question is can I put a Quadrajet from a 76 on a 83. There are obvious differences, but they would seem all related to emissions control that I don't have to worry about. :D (I love Indiana!)

TIA

sounds like you need to start saving $$$$ cause your trans. is about to :nuke: :nuke: . You might try the filter anyway its a cheap fix. As for the Carb. you can swap but you might need "adapter" plate......:D

Check your throttle position sensor indicator if it has one like mine does. When I had my tranny rebuilt it was fine till i messed with the carb and threw off the throttle sensor cable.

Duh! Duh, Duh!

Sorry guys, I had a bad case of "dumbitis" :D

Just for shits and giggles, I checked the fluid level, it was about a quart low. As soon as I put that in, no problemo`, it shifted "normally".

Now, onto the carb.

The POS that's on there is exactly that, a POS. I looked at my old 76 Carb, and it's just different enough that I don't think that it'll work right.

So, two options. One, go to a junkyard and find a replacement quadrajunk and put it on there, with the "hopes" that it's ok. Or two, buy an aftermarket.

I was looking through my Jeg's and Summit, and there is a Holley Spread bore replacement for q-junks. I'm looking at a Vacuum Secondary with an electric choke. Anyone used this particular carb? Worth the 300 bones?

If this is a 4X4 I think you would be a fool to put a Holly in place of a Quadrajet. I know a QJ cost more but the Holly is a POS on the trail. Just my .02

Holleys and Performer carbs are not worth a crap for off camber wheeling. I have tried both and promptly got rid of them. The best all around stock wheeling carb is the quadrojet! Simple to work on, easy to get parts for. FI is more wheeling friendly, but if it takes a dump on the trail you could be Boned! :skull:

Spend the $$$$ on the rebuild kit and keep what you got.....spend the 300 on something else...
