: dialing in a propane motor?...(longish)

I did my conversion a while ago and it runs OK. Now I'm about ready to finish my junk up and I want to really get this thing running perfect. Right now it feels a little sluggish (more then I expected on propane). It makes good power but I think there is more in there. Also it stinks fierce when it runs like it is way to rich.

How do I dial this thing in? How do I read the plugs? They won't carbon up like a gas engine will they? If I get a exhaust sniffer do I lok for the same things or am I searching for diferent stuff? the place I bought my conversion from is not very helpful:mad: so any info is much appreciated.

Next question is what kind of range are you getting? I think I may have screwed my self on mine :( I'm running the forklift size bottles for a fuel source because of avauilability and price around me. I have 2 tanks mounted in the bed of my MJ and draw off of one and had planed to switch to the other when I ran one tank dry. I was hoping this would give me enough fuel for a couple of days on the trail. I had planned on always having spares in the tow rig or maybe adding a provision to store a 3rd tank in the MJ. I have heard that the 2 tanks I run equals about 8 gallons of propane, is this enough for a full day or maybe even 2 days on the trail? Should I look for more storage or maybe make sure I return to the tow rig every night? Again, any input on this is appreciated-no one around me runs propane or knows jack about it.....I feel alone, very, very alone:rolleyes:

maybe you should tell them you have a mildly built SBC in there and not a 4.0

Well I don't really have a lot to offer you, but I suggest calling a few of the local propane suppliers around, and asking then where they get their propane powered service trucks serviced at. Then you can take it down there and have them tweak on it. When I converted my rig over, I guess I was lucky. I bolted the stuff on, advanced my timing a few degrees, and it ran perfect. Sounds like you do need your air/fuel adjusted. Also some cooler plugs might help. As for forklift bottles, the forklift bottles around here at 15 gallons each. You can stuff about 12/13 gallons in each one, so that should give you more than enough fuel for the weekend.

You can try giving these guys a call, too:

Thanks for the range info Lance!

I tried the suppliers around here without much luck. They either want no part of a privetly owned vehicle or they are pissed I didn't buy from them:rolleyes:

sounds like my problem I plan to take mine to a forklift shop for final tuning ( by the end of the day your nose burns like hell) as for the range I also run two eight gallon forklift tanks and can get about 7-8 hours of run time off of them on the trail on a 406 small block
