: Motor off set

I mounted my SB 350, TH 350 and transfer case this weekend. Per A/A instructions I off set the motor about 1 inch to the drivers side. I know A/A say this is to allow for more drive shaft clearance but I am uncomfortable with this set up. Will this cause vibrations at the rear drive shaft?? Could I center the whole set up and just purchase a small diameter front drive shaft?? Do you guys know from experience that the 1 inch offset is ok, this is my first conversion on a Land Cruiser and I want to make sure that is done right.
Thanks

The offset to the drivers side will not cause problems. It just creates a different plane for the driveshaft angularity, because there is angularity in the vertical and horizontal planes. There will be slightly more angularity so check for binding as with any driveshaft through the suspension flex, but it will not affect anything adversely.

I offset mine more than an inch. Of course, the fj55 has more room between the frame rails- not sure how much. There was barely enough room to fit the exhaust manifold- and with a fj60 power steering conversion, that wasn't a problem either. The front driveshaft was the only issue- but that's an sm420 thing.

If you're using the AA setup, you can always go back and move the engine sideways if you want- It's a pretty friendly engine mount setup.

FYI - a FJ55 has 2" more room between the frame rails in the engine bay and about 1.2" in the rear than a FJ40.

I knew the 55 was wider between the frame- when I bought the AA tcase crossmember- there is a different xmember for the 55's- just a bit wider. Didn't know how much. And now I do. Thank's much!

The stocker engine was offset left also. If you don't offset your conversion, the shafts will be too far to the right.
