I'm about to buy a winch and i'm pretty sure it's going to be the Warn XD9000i any good or bad input on this winch? The best deal on the net was carparts.com for $749.95

Thanks,

Don

Seens like around 3000 lbs of overkill for a Zuk but then it depends on how much and if you can still buy 6000lb ones.
I have an 8000 on the front and a 6000 on the rear. But I am also running 1/2 ton gear.

Basic rule of thumb is twice the weight of the truck for pull rating.
If the 9000 is a better price , then go for it.

My thinking is about the same weight +10lb on the front of my samurai, 125' of cable verses 80' on the 6000lb and I think i'll be pulling heavier heeps out and why not buy big then there's no wishing I got bigger later. I was just wondering how the warns are working for other people?

That's about as cheap as that winch gets. It's a Goodie - FAST too.

You should only 'need' 1.5x your vehicles weight. That how I selected my Ramsey 5000. However, I have stalled my 5K and had to use a pulley block to get off a large bolder I was high centered on. Ramsey is slow, but you add the pulley and it's grass growing slow :). On the exit from Upper Proving grounds last year I opted to be pulled up the waterfall. I was afraid my battery would not hold up long enough for snail winch to get me over with a pulley, and concerned it would stall without the pulley.

I'm going back with a Warn XD8000i. The only difference between the XD8000i and the XD9000i is in gearing. The 9000 is a little slower because of it.

Jayson has a XD8000i. It's been used quite a few times, including pulling a Suburban up a nasty trail (with his Samurai chained to a tree :p ). It's fast, strong and reliable...

If you really want speed, check out the HS9500! That baby's quick :D :D :D

Just a thought,
Since you are living in Wa. You may want to rethink the because I might need to "pull out heavier heeps" I'll get the bigger one, criteria for your winch purchase. My experience is, that your zuk will start to get pulled in before you will pull out a heep (we use an 8274). Keep in mind all you pure rockhounds, that his conditions include dirt, mud, slippery wet rocks, moss and other not so firm terra firma. Even on zuk to zuk pulls we often have had to anchor the winching vehicle to a tree or another zuk (which really tweaks your frame!) just to aid a zuk up a steep muddy / slimy rock incline. Just a consideration for you from a fellow North West wheeler.

All your other reasons make a heck of a lot sence. Besides in this case more is better!

Uh... okay. Like you said, he lives in WA. Which means trees. Lots of trees. Do what I do when pulling on a Jeep with my Toy... positon yourself so that the front bumper is resting against a tree, just to one side of the roller fairlead. Wrap a tree strap around the tree before you do it = no stretching forces from strapping back bumper to tree, and no damage to the tree.

When you're stuck in a forest and you have a winch, you're not really stuck.

:D I love my Warn:D (it's a x8000i) it pulled my x-cab dually 4x and fully loaded flatbed (about 11000 lb total) through 12" of snow 40 yards no problem (long story don't ask)
