All of a sudden my gas gauge reads empty as soon as it gets below 3/4 of a tank. It works fine and then just goes dead.
Is there a way to test the gauge? Should I just pull it out of the tank and check the resistance over the float's travel or what?
Does anyone know what the resistance of the gauge should be?
TIA!:beer:

Probably the fuel sender from how you describe it. The sender is basically a wire-wound resistor with a "pointer" that rides on the wrapped wire as the float moves up or down. I haven't taken mine apart, but it looks the ame as a VW style. You can pop the tabs to see the resistor pack. Probably a bit dirty or worn. You might be able to just clean it up a bit and then put it back in.

When I fill it up this afternoon I think I'll plug in the multi meter and watch the resistance of the sender unit as it fills up. That should shed some light on the condition of the resistor I guess.

The resistance of the OEM Toyota fuel gauge is as follows:
full = 17 +/- 2.1 ohms
half = 40 +/- 4.5 ohms
empty = 120 +/- 6.5 ohms
