txtoy 01-04-2005, 08:31 AM well im following in my brothers (nick & john hall) footsteps into the toyota 4x4. i know theyd like to see me in an 85 but the only trucks in texas seem to be fords. Finally i found a 94 toyota and i decided to snag it. it's a 5spd and the guy before me had it on 31's. i was wondering what i can do to it while on a college students income. any suggestions? i'd post a pic if i knew how.

txtoy 01-04-2005, 09:06 AM slocrawl over anything.
hbar314 01-04-2005, 12:15 PM where are you in texas?

What are your final goals with it? Wheeling it? Street truck? Prerunner?
Cant really suggest anything unless you give us your end use ideas?
There is lots you could do with it....drive it...sell it....junk it.....store it...etc... :flipoff2:
KC_JoNeS 01-04-2005, 01:34 PM Cant you ask Nick and John?
Just kiddin'. Well, just attempt to do parts at a time. Save up for an 85 solid axle. Find a donor transfer case so you can do the duals. Start looking for gears and lockers and various other things like wheels and tires.
txtoy 01-04-2005, 02:08 PM it's going to be my daily driver but i'd like to be able to take it off road and have some fun. maybe something that will allow me to upgrade later if i ever want to dedicate it to rock crawler or something. i'm between san marcos, kerville, and houston depending on if im in school or at my parents house. if john ever finds out he's sure to ask me for parts... haha
OOP'S 01-04-2005, 06:50 PM Onr thing that I will stress, if you plan o doing a SAS, do not dump any money into the IFS, save the money for other mods!!!!! :grinpimp:
txtoy 01-04-2005, 06:59 PM i've heard the independent is pretty cowardly. so whats the best place to start? does anyone know any houstonish area places to avoid shipping costs on parts?
4Mogger 01-04-2005, 07:09 PM Definitely don't put any $ in the IFS. I drove a mostly stock 4Runner for 10 years until I could afford to build it up right.
Crank up the torsion bars just a bit, add a leaf to the rear spring packs and you can easily run 32's. Add a locker in the rear and you will be very happy with the performance you get both on and off the road!
Violent91 01-04-2005, 07:38 PM i second the torsion bar crank. Crank em up an inch....get a 2" BL....rear locker and 33s. I wheeled like that for a long time. See if you can break it.
If you wanna go further after that, the you'll know that you want a solid axle.
Do you go to Tx State?
txtoy 01-05-2005, 06:42 AM yeah im in txstate as a freshman this year. thanks for all the suggestions so far.
erg801 01-05-2005, 11:23 AM 3" BL, 33s, Rear Locker, maybe even dual cases...Wheel the piss out of it and save up the money for the SAS if you want to move up to the next step. Your truck will ride so much better on the street with the SAS than the shitty IFS too.

Nah, don't mess with the torsion bars. You'll hate the ride. Put on a 2" body lift, 3.25" backspaced wheels and you can run 33" tires. You *might* have to pound the inner fender seam a little bit. Then go wheel the piss out of it and learn how to drive/wheel your truck.
Then start making build up plans.
I've run the Rubicon many times like this.
Phil
Flygtenstein 01-05-2005, 05:08 PM A 1" bodylift will make room for 33's.
A rear locker will still work when you swap it. You will still have a low truck that wheels and DD's decent.
That set up will get you on a lot of trails without being a monster truck.
Buy an idler arm brace or you will fold steering pretty regularly.
Not to flame, but this sounds like newbie.
4Mogger 01-05-2005, 09:45 PM Nah, don't mess with the torsion bars. You'll hate the ride.

I swapped out my torsion bars for heavier ones sold by Downey. When cranked up a bit they still rode very well with the heavier wheel/tire combo. If it will be a couple of years before you can go SAS, this would be money well spent. (about 200$)
