: what year did the FJ40 start split t-case
Deep South Cruisers 02-11-2002, 11:36 AM I'm looking into a 76FJ40 and I know it has the same drivetrain as my FJ60 (2f,3.71) but was the transfer case split in the 76???
what years did the FJ40 have the split case???
rick d 02-11-2002, 11:49 AM US models had one piece case until July, 1980
August 1980 (1981 models) had split type case, semi domed 2F, 3.70 fine spline pinion (started 1/79). First generation (until 10/85) had 34mm idler shaft, post 10/85 had 38mm idler (can id from rear of t-case w/ caliper)
FYI, 10th month (October) is normal Toyota model year change for 90% of cars and trucks.
1976 should have flat top 2F, one piece case, and course spline pinion 4.11s.
It is NOT an FJ60 drivetrain and has many other differences if it was a stock 1976.
Deep South Cruisers 02-11-2002, 12:09 PM thanks Rick, I did some reading after I posted and you know your Fj's. :D
The problem I keep running into is owners that don't REALLY know what they have. I just got off the phone with a guy that has a "75" fj40, he told me it was STOCK with 4.11's, split t-case, ant the F2 (hehe) motor
buyer beware
I WANT 4.11's, P.S., Disc brakes, 4spd, 2f, no rust (hey its my dream) :D

So buy a 76-78 FJ that has no rust and put PS on it. Easiest way to get what you want.... And you can find them without rust. You just have to look harder...
Deep South Cruisers 02-11-2002, 02:47 PM Yes, Jason thats what I'm figuring out. I have found 2 excellent candidates so far.
1. 1977 stock 2f, new carb, new paint, rhino lined, header, with 60k original miles $7,000
2. 1977 rebuilt t/c- trans & 2f bored, welded f/r 4.88's 39.5 swampers $11,000
what do YOU think:question:
Mr McGee 02-11-2002, 04:40 PM .... And you can find them without rust.
HAHAHA
I admit, you can find them without rust, but my 78 from "rusty, salty winter-conditions" wisconsin had holes the size of softballs in the bed. I was taking off the front fenders and i snapped all *8* bolts. She was pretty bad...but with 14ga. diamond plate bed, stainless quarters, and lots of protection, she should be fine.:D :D
Advent Horizon 02-11-2002, 11:57 PM Hey, it *is* possible to find them w/out rust!
I bought my '76 40 last August, and the frame has less rust than my dad's '95 Ford. And all that pos does is sit in the driveway :flipoff2:
