: Best YJ High Steering Set up for Dana 44?
RSQJEEP 02-11-2002, 12:12 PM I know there is a lot of the hi steer systems getting tried out lately.
(Bellavista has a great site on this. If you are not familar with hi steer set ups, check it out: http://www.billavista.tripod.com/Steering/Research/steeringresearch.html)
I want to know what has worked best for the SOA YJ's with the dana 44's up front. What works and what to avoid.
If you have pics, please post.
Keith Strong 02-11-2002, 12:23 PM I got all my stuff from Grady at Extreme Off-Road. I am very very happy with it, maybe I can take a couple pics this week and post em. All I need now is Ram :D
LOS-YJ 02-11-2002, 04:56 PM I am doing Hy steer on my 44.. I am running the Inverted T, I went with PartsMike steering arms they are really nice quality.. :smokin: :smokin:
Jeeper 02-11-2002, 06:06 PM Went with Avalanche Stuff. Good Quality, excellent customer service.

RSQJEEP 02-12-2002, 07:54 AM Can you guys post some pictures of the steering set up?
How much did it cost? Did you have to buy the new d/l and t/r or can you use it from a donor vehicle?
ChadLloyd 02-12-2002, 08:05 AM Personally I like H8s tie rod behind the diff setup best.
I'm telling you... read the topic of the week sticky up top... lots of pics, and lots of top notch reading.
RSQJEEP 02-12-2002, 08:13 AM I read the thread at the top already. I'll keep checking on the post...it seems to be avery popular subject. It does have some helpful info when you can weed out the bickering and idea tossing. I wanted to know what has been used and works; not what people are thinking about creating.
I need to do this high steer as cheaply as possible...spent all my coin on the axles, lockers, and gears. THe stuff that counts...what do you need steering for? The ruts guide you as you go.;)
RSQJEEP 02-12-2002, 10:45 AM Cross over steering looks good and cheap. Go with the Avalanche arm on the already studded passenger chevy knuckle. I might be able to then run the stock chevy tie rod and be done for $98.00.
Tie rod will be under springs, but the guys with that set up said they have had no problems with that set up.
Will the Jeep pitman arm work with the drag link or do I have to machine it out?
Keith Strong 02-12-2002, 11:39 AM Only problem with having the tie rod under is its vulnerable. I went through 4 tie rods in 2 years...since I went steering over I havent even worn the ends on this one ;) (Course, now I got dents in my diff cover  )

The driverside knuckle is already studded not the passanger side. This means you have to pay for the knuckle work a steering arm and draglink/ or draglink modifications. I doupt any stock tierod will be the exact width you want so plan to pay for it. The price of histeer isnt much more so you might as well spend the dough now instead of having to redo it later.
Also you said you looked at billavista's site? if you really looked at all the link you would of answered all your questions conserning different options and prices.
Square Peg 02-12-2002, 01:43 PM If you're going to cut and tap a rod or link end, it's better to cut the right handed thread side(if you have the option) since it's easier to find a tap for it.
Here is a pic of my steering setup. I had Parts Mike bend my arms for me and I made the tie rod and drag link.
If you want to run the GM tie rod ends, you will have to re-taper your pitman arm.

what do people recommend for the ends .... hiem joints or TRE's?
BlueYJ 02-15-2002, 07:55 AM If it is an everyday driver go with TRE's, Even avalanch reccomends this. The Heims will wear out to quickly.
HEY ERIC are your TRE's the ES150r & L ?
And if you are using the larger TRE's for your drag link then get a waggy pitman arm. They will fit right in.

Nope, I am using the GM 1/2 ton - 1 ton TREs with a 7/8" shank. The pitman arm is a YJ which I reamed out to fit the GM drag link end. I also reamed out the steering stabilizer hole in the right side TRE to fit the other drag link TRE.
Pitman arm ES2027L
Drag link ES2234R
Tie Rod (L) ES2234R
Tie Rod (R) ES2233L
Here is a pic of the different TREs that I have used.

BlueYJ 02-15-2002, 09:07 AM Thanks Eric,
The ES150's are 3/4 shank, I am going to get some sleeves and 1.5" DOM rod and make my own drap link and tie rod using these TRE's. Thanks for getting back to me.

Similar setup on my YJ. It works really well for me.
