: Best Clutch For The 2.5L ???
Boston Mangler 02-11-2002, 02:35 PM Ok
I am installing a 97 TJ motor into my 89 YJ and have pretty much everything figured out but the clutch.
I am doing the Tri County Gear interia ring and was wondering what yall recommended for a clutch?
TCG says they use the stock one cause the HD Aftermarket ones beat up the other components of the clutch and such. This true? I dont see how or why it would.
Anyone with a a 2.5L have any advice on a good clutch?
Thanks
Keith Strong 02-11-2002, 02:41 PM You are going 4 cyl to 4 cyl????? Why? (just curious...not flaming)
Boston Mangler 02-11-2002, 02:48 PM >>>>>>You are going 4 cyl to 4 cyl????? Why? (just curious...not flaming)
***** Yes, i am replacing my very old and beat 2.5L with a new one from a 97 TJ.
Here is why:
-Its a direct Bolt In that i can do myself
-I found a Smoking Deal for the motor and tranny with 50k on em and my tranny is tired too!
-I am getting married and moving to Cali in July and this is the best way to put in a new motor without the misses knowing and the most economical for me at this time
-I have grown to love wheeling my 2.5L and the thing runs when it is almost vertical! It sucks on the highway but then again most jeeps do.
-4Cyl = Minimal Breakage
-I can do the whole swap in a weekend and the woman will never even know what i have done and how much i spent :D
These are my reasons for doing this, it just seems to be the best option for me right now so i dont have to junk my rig.
Thanks For The Reply!
aaronlosey 02-11-2002, 02:49 PM i would go with luke clutches. i have used them in the past, and they are good stuff. stay away from centerforce and their like, cause they suck for jeep applications.
my yj 6 cylinder luke clutch rebuild kit as $202, if i remember right. and it came with everything, all i had to do was go get the flywheel resurfaced. just my .02
wild1 02-11-2002, 02:50 PM Reliability, smaller components(more clearence), less weight.:D

Where does one find these? Seems the 2.5L doesnt have many options for clutches!
>>>>>stay away from centerforce and their like, cause they suck for jeep applications.
****** Whys that? Arent they good under high RPM's? My little 2.5L is usually at high rpm's to get out of its own way Does the extra strength of a Centerforce Clutch (or similar) F up the other clutch components??
Thanks
thanks
Boston Mangler 02-12-2002, 04:24 PM What are the thoughts on a NAPA Clutch Kit?
Thanks
kwrangln 02-12-2002, 04:40 PM I'm on my second NAPA clutch kit, no complaints. I change the clutch every 70-75 thousand miles when the slave cylinder goes out, havent had any noticable wear on one yet, never any problem with slippage, and it's the cheapest option.
Now, what did the inertia ring cost ya?? have been thinking of getting one for a while now, just wish I had known about them the last time I yanked the tranny. How much grinding do you really have to do on the back of the block to fit it on there?

***** It cost me $129 dollars plus shipping. Here is the info on it http://www.tricountygear.com/4_cyl__only.htm

****** I havent got it yet in the mail (hopefully tomorrow) but my buddy just did it and he said it was minimal.
Thanks for the input on the Napa Clutch!
Any idea who makes em?
thanks
Charly 02-12-2002, 04:59 PM Kevin,
This will help you.
It's not a Luke clutch, it's LuK...that's the brand. It's a well-known and trusted brand.
Here are a couple sites, they sell LuK clutches:

http://www.dialaclutch.com/shopf.htm

Boston Mangler 02-12-2002, 05:37 PM WOW
That Price of $161 seems way to good to be true.
It says it inclues the Disk, Pressure Plate, Release Bearing, Pilot Bushing, Alignment tool AND the Slave Cylinder all for $161
The Slave cylinder ALONE is $134 at Napa and the Bearing is $120. What gives here? Is this really a great as it sounds??
Their Description:
Jeep ALL MODELS 4cyl 2.5L 87-92 (9-1/8") w/Slave Cylinder
Part No.01-033 $160.96
WOW
Is it made in Bangledesh? LOL
:D
Thanks Guys!
kwrangln 02-12-2002, 06:20 PM Cant remember the maker of the NAPA clutch off the top of my head, lost the recipt around here somewhere. Kit came with disk, pressure plate, and slave/throwout bearing for something like $118. I only really needed the slave/throwout, so getting the rest of the kit was a bonus. Got it about a year ago there. To heck with the web, call the local parts shops in the phone book on this one.
Ken
Boston Mangler 02-12-2002, 06:24 PM That kit for $118 included the SLAVE CYLINDER and the THROWOUT Bearing??
which application ya got?
Napa gave me MUCH high prices then that
They said the Slave Cylinder was $120 + and the Throwout bearing was $114 or so
thanks
Charly 02-12-2002, 06:24 PM Kev,
Up until 94, the 2.5Ls used an internal hydraulic release bearing, so it is the release bearing and slave cylinder all in one.
Charly
Boston Mangler 02-12-2002, 06:28 PM AHHH
I get ya!!!
The Throwout Bearing and the Slave Cylinder are all one unit on my specific application???
That explains why the bearing has hoses coming out of it huh?
Weird, i wonder why napa has 2 seperate listings for each part.
So, if i order a new Throwout bearing i dont have to worry about ordering a slave cause its all one right?
What an odd design!
Nothing like my old CJ
Thanks and Please Excuse The Ignorance!
:D
kwrangln 02-12-2002, 06:43 PM dont get too in depth with the counter guys as to throwout bearings and such, you'll only confuse em:D Yes slave and throwout bearing are one unit, and its a stupid design. That unit is the reason I'm on my third clutch in my heep, it keeps going out at about 70 k or so. Also what ever you do, dont even bother hooking up any lines till the tranny is bolted back up to the block (dont ask me how I know :emb: ) and dont break the tabs that keep the slave compressed, they'll break on their own the first time you use the pedal. Lets just say that the stupid thing doesnt like being extended without a clutch there to hold it back:nuke:
Ken
Boston Mangler 02-12-2002, 06:45 PM lol
thanks man
now i know and knowing is.............
chadl 02-13-2002, 05:25 AM I replaced my 4.0 clutch last month with a Luk clutch, very complete kit, even included the pilot bearing for both a 4 and 6 cylinder, plus the hydraulic throwout, disk, and pressure plate. I think it was around $160 for the whole thing, and like you, I seemed too good to be true (espcially after pricing at NAPA), but it wasn't. Anyway highly recomended.
Chad
Boston Mangler 02-13-2002, 05:29 AM Thanks All
LUK it is!
Insayn 02-13-2002, 08:02 AM I believe the NAPA clutches are Borg and Warner packages. Mine came with the pressure plate, clutch disc, throughout bearing and alignment tool.
