: Aren't Front FJ-40 and FJ-55 springs the same?
wngrog 02-11-2002, 03:40 PM What's the story? Gotta get rid of those God Aweful 3" shackles on my Pig, but I sure like the way it looks right now with the lift it has with the full length add-a-leaf and the God Aweful 3" shackles.
I have some OME FJ-40 springs so I was thinking of using the FJ-40 fronts on my Pig and leaving the God Aweful 3" shackles in the rear until I can save up for some 2 1/2" rear Pig springs.
Did I say the 3" shackles were God Aweful?
The thing was ALL OVER the road on my 200 mile road trip this weekend!
Jason M 02-11-2002, 04:00 PM The front 55 springs are center pinned just like the rears are. So if you did the FJ40 springs in the front you would either have the front axle forward 1.75" or back 1.75" Plus mounting them might be a bit of a pain. The 40 springs have that smaller diameter bushing (not all that big of a dea but...)
Actually, you might be able to offset drill the spring pads enough to make up for the difference....

wngrog 02-11-2002, 04:14 PM Crap,
Forgot about that tidbit of information...oh well, scratch that idea...
60seriesguy 02-11-2002, 04:34 PM Nolen, Dobinson makes a suspension kit for the FJ55, and it's supposed to be pretty good. I've driven an FJ60 with a 2.5" Dobinson kit, and it was comparable to an OME. Just a thought...
sixty 02-11-2002, 05:41 PM Spring over w/ de-arched springs  that thing will ride like a caddilac & have the body roll of an f-15 :D
I think you could probably redrill to relocate the center pin. b/c its only 1.75" . That portion will be clamped by the spring plates I don't think stregth will be an issue. the bushing issue could be solved by making up a custom shackle w/ a smaller bolt in the bottom. this would cost less than buying new front springs & bring your castor back within spec
I would try alcans if you bought new springs & have them made a little long (45+ degree shackle). I just finished putting the axles back on my S.U. fj60 w/ OME springs & that thing rides like a brick (but hey it corners like a porche)!! My spring over fj60 is VERY smooth.
I still think you should spring it over & use REAL flat springs :D

Can't redrill the springs. I thought OMEs were designed with that integral flat spot to prevent sag. This might prevent moving the center pin.

dog walker 02-11-2002, 06:33 PM The last time I checked I could have sworn that the length and center pin location on FJ40/45/55/60/62 are all the same. The only difference being the bushing size on the 55/60/62.

wngrog 02-11-2002, 06:52 PM Sorry,
No SOA on this Pig. I would love to for the ride, but not this time, she's too stock.
I am going to pull the extended shackles out and see what happens. The add-a-leaf is a full length job and they have taper and all, so it was a good job. Thin leaf like the stock 55.
We'll see after I put the stock shackle on this weekend if I even need to lift it to clear the 33 x 10.50's on it.
JasonH 02-12-2002, 07:30 AM Nolen,
I know you're not big on shims, but I have a bunch of extras if you want to put some in while you still have those long shackles.
It'll at least keep it from wandering as much.
Are the new tires on? Let's see a pic!
Medusa 02-12-2002, 07:42 AM I'm with Jeff. I know for certain that the length of the 40, 45 and 55 front springs are the same. Hold you nose, Nolen, crawl under the pig and and measure the offset. The larger bushing size is not a problem -- you just need to be a bit creative.
wngrog 02-12-2002, 10:36 AM Jason, thanks but it has shims already. The Pig is aligned perfectly and has positive caster, it is just unstable to put a wagon up on 3" over stock shackles. It totally blows!
I will measure the pins and see if they are centered in the front...
Screwzer 02-14-2002, 05:51 PM I could be blowin' chunks, but for some reason, I remember that the 55 springs are a bit wider than 40's. Like I said, I could be way wrong. The bushings are definately different.
Jason M 02-15-2002, 08:04 AM Yep the bushings are different. But spring widths are the same.
Nolen, have you measured that bad boy yet???
wngrog 02-15-2002, 09:25 AM No I am in Shit-hole Orlando (Sorry Tracknod). I will be home tonight for a glorious 3 day weekend!!
Will measure them then.
RHINO 02-15-2002, 08:36 PM hey nolen the spring pins are centered, and the bushes are different from the 40. did you see the pic i put on your last post? my pig stuffed the 33" skinnies real good and never rubbed that remember. i think you'll be ok with the 10.50's.
