: questions about MOAB

well, i've been wheeling for 4 years and over that time my truck has changed a lot.

a friend invited me to with him to Moab during Easter. he's going to pull my truck and his bronco down there on his truck.

whats the best places to go. what trails do you think my truck would be alright on, ect. what mods should i make before i get there.

this might be a newbie type question, but being miles from home and broken would suck!

anyway here's what i have done to my truck (85 xtra cab)

5mge supra motor (i had it running really well for a couple of months now. i took it out last saturday and four wheeled the snot out of it without any problems.)

front suspension- stock waggy's, ford shock mounts, 14" travel shocks, all-pro hysteer, fj60 steering box, supra power steering pump, diff protection, 4.10 gears (open)

Rear suspension- 91 rear toyota springs, 14" shocks / \, buggy leaf, very long shackles, diff protection, lincoln locked 4.10 gears.

w56 tranny, stock 2.28 transfer case.

Tires: 32x11.5x15 BFG muds

i am going to put 33X12.5X15 of some sort. i want a radial since i have to drive my truck to work and everywhere else. not sure on swampers, bfg's or someother brand.

i have a highlift jack, and full size spare, spare computer, ignition, relays, and other stuff as well as all the tools.

i want to replace my rear springs as well. but since i have bobbed the frame i can't use chevy's. does anyone have suggestions for rear springs. i have a flatbed to its pretty light back there. i need something to match the front waggys.

thanks

I would suggest dual t-cases. Other than that it sounds like you are ready to go.

try these;

Moab Itinerary:

April 17th Travel day to Moab
April 18th Poison Spider Mesa - Golden Spike - Gold Bar Rim
April 19th Pritchett Canyon - Behind the Rocks
April 20th Hell's Revenge - Lion's Back - Potato Salad Hill
April 21st Moab Rim - Cliff Hanger
April 22nd Metal Masher - Long Canyon
April 23rd Fins and Things - Porcupine Rim
April 24th Travel home

Made for a fun trip last year anyway :smokin:

i can't afford dual cases this year. tires and springs are about it. the supra motor has a lot more low end then the 22re, in my opinion. but it might be the way i have the motor set up. i can climb up stuff much easier then with the 22re, i have a bigger clutch now and more low end torque. i might get a set of junkyard 4.38's to replace the 4.10's.

all i can really afford this year is new rear springs and tires. i spent to much on my engine swap last year.

Moab is incredibly fun. Without lower gears you might thrash a bit. Pritchet is awesome. AT style tires usually do better than bigger lugged tires. TJMHO.

You should be okay on most of the trails down there with your setup. I've done Pritchett, Cliffhanger, Poison Spider, Moab Rim, Steelbender, Golden Spike, Fins and Things and some others in my open diffed, stock geared toyota with 32's. Fins and Things is a good first trail to get a feel for how it is to drive on the Moab slickrock.

"...and what does moab have to do with toyota tech..."

read the post focker...

"...what mods should i make before i get there?"

this might be a newbie type question, but being miles from home and broken would suck!

He is obviously concerned about the mods and performance as well as trails and not breaking too much stuff while he is wheeling and having fun with his buddy...

Lock up your front diff. That will be the best bang for the buck for your easter trip. If at all possible gear it down any way you can. If you break you'll be suprised what parts the little napa store has to offer. Most of all just plan on have'n fun !! :smokin:

Check out this link for information on trails.

I would say you will be fine on most of the trails with a good spotter. I took my Tacoma with 31's on Poison Spider Mesa, Fins and Things, and Flat Iron Mesa and only had to be towed thru a small section on Flat Iron Mesa. I have open diffs.

Have fun! :)

sounds sweet. i can hardly wait. i think i'll leave the front open for now. i don't have any spare barf fields, and would perfer not to break them. the worst damage i have done to my truck is ripping shock mounts off.

thanks. hopefully i can find some cheap diffs.
