: stumbling/rough idle now...

after replacing wires, plugs, coil etc...the LWB has ran fine, but now has a problem with idle.
it stumbles and sometimes dies at idle.
not sure where to look. I was thinking it may be the vac usin in the replacement dist i ma temp using until getting rebuild kit for orig.....but.

the rattling/clanking cats are getting worse, and last night when we dropped Orin of at his Dad's he and I were talking about teh idle. he mentioned the cats...hmm! could they be clogged enough to be an idle issue, but not be a problem running? it funs fine.
Kenny thought the exhaust smelled funny(I had just asked him as we had thought it did too. hs mentioned sorta like natural gas or propane?? not sure as I have a cold) and asked about the whole bad cat smelling funny issue?

when I got home and moved teh disco back in front of the house, I smelled it's exh, and it smelled same as the LWB to me...so dummo

suggestions?

oh! and now there is a !%$@ on the ecu readout! arrch! damn mass airflow?? i replaced that last year when it dropped a 12 and sent PTS the old one, so can't even swap in to see. guess should try the one from teh disco?

I believe checking the vacuum will give an indication of poor flow through the engine.

Lemme know if you need the MAF back :flipoff2:

Clean the IAC valve too. Classic symptom, dies at stoplights, etc.

Fuel pressure?

well there is vac fro manifold...there is resistance from the vac valve thingy, but not sure if it moves when I suck on it...will try in morning or tonight...

cleaned the IAC valve (by the way, if you remove this when engine is running...it accelerates rpm exdtremely before dying! :D ) maybe take the one from disco and swap in to see if divverent?? hard to do with Elisa back at work now(teachers here get three weeks off for x-mas) so can only work on it after hours now.

what about the cat issue? Elisa has been wanting replacements as they are noisy since six months ago, but I was putting that off being a CB.....shouldn't have passed up that FREE y-pipe with good cats....DOH! :shaking:

I meant hooking up a vacuum gauge and measuring the vacuum...

If it is stumbling at iddle, unless the vacuum advance is badly leaking, it should have no impact on idle speeds.

Is the timing right?

When I reassembled my engine, the engine wouldn't start at all until I re-aligned the dist. Then it ran ROUGH. I must have been off by 1 tooth, because we got it put in correctly and now it runs fine.

Idles very smooth, runs great, (doesn't leak...), but occasionally it will just quit at idle, as if the ignition was switched off. Weird.

Check your timing. Oh, be sure to check your plug firing order and your wires too. I have had two swapped before, and even though it would run, it was rough.

uh......well.. not sure!
I static timed it, but than DID rotate slightly to adjust by ear...oops! am supposed to time it w/o the vac attached as well. will do tomorrow. I have the rangie for a day of testing as she has jury duty tomorrow(HER BIRTHDAY! Fun eh?)
I have no idea where my vac gauge is, but do have a manifold pressure gauge sitting on the floor of disco...never properly mounted by the PO :shaking: :D or me as I almost never use it...it is hooked up...but...guess I can pull that and hook it up... I was feeling no vac at idle, but at higher rpm it is there...

will see what the timing ended up after I rotated it...was at 6 deg, but I did slightly rotate...but it runs great when driving...just the idle is sometimes erratic(ok Elisa tells me it NEVER idles fine...hmm!)
ok she now tells me it isn't putting out the power it did at all!
now I am wondering if the dist is advancing at all? maybe it's jammed? was sitting for a long time w/o starting engine, there was some moisture inside maybe something is sticking/rusted? hope not!
the plug firing order is correct, I made sure that I did that right....made that mistake last year...

Problem at idle, but not at running speeds could again lead us to looking at vacuum...

What all have you done to this engine in the recent past? Anything involving the intake, etc?

NOTHING! literally...just oil, fuel and coolant...oh! and power steering fluid! :shaking:

I had disconnected teh maf connection and pulled it away from the aircleaner to get out of teh way when replacing teh wires/plugs. maybe there is a leak on teh flex hose to teh plenum? I sprayed carb cleaner all over everywhere else checking for leaks, but not the MAF or that flex hose...hmm! and maybe the MAF is not fully connected now too? or...or...???

remember she said it was not getting full power ever...I just droe it and it felt fine 'cept for idle...hmm! need to eat, than will dig into it.
