does anyone use a 1500 Hemi non-extended cab short bed for towing at all? I am looking for a DD truck that will be able to tow the TJ on a trailer at some point.

Any comments?

Should be fine for the occasional tow. I used a '90 GMC short/reg-cab 1500 for a long time as my towrig. The issue for a 1/2 ton truck is brakes & suspension & tranny cooling. Don't tow in OD (if automatic). One thing I'd be concerned with is power. I didn't have much & it kept me in check. You'll have enough to motor down the highway at 70+ without much issue. But, if you get into a "panic" situation, you don't really have the suspension & brakes to get out of trouble. Keep the speed to a sane level, & I'd think you should be okay. Like most who had a 1/2 ton truck, I now tow with a 1-ton & it's a World different. But, if towing isn't the primary function of your truck, and you keep the loads to 5-6,000lbs, you should do fine.

Any of the half tons would be OK, if you have a choice go for an extended cab or a standard cab long bed. The more wheel base the better. I pull with a titan, pulls fine compared to my old dodge v10. You do notice the lack of weight though. If you are going to be pulling more often spring for a 2500, can be bought for a few hundred more with the same engine.

Keep it out of OD. I've towed with the exact opposite end of the body spectrum: 4 Door long bed but also a 1/2t HEMI. SLT package is sweet.

The 1500 Hemi has a 5 speed trans with a real tow/haul setting.

I tow with a half ton. I wish I had a longer wheel base and a better set of springs on it.

Still WAY safer than flat towing, or drivig a jimmi-rigged together truck home from the trail.

Tow with a Titan? How does it do for an occasional tow? Need a DD/tow rig (occasional)

automatics suck for towing, your better off with o/d standard transmission or better yet would be a truck with 4 on the floor :flipoff2:
unless you already do :cool2:

I used to flat tow with my 97 Dodge Ram standard cab/short bed w 360 and auto. It worked OK for how far i had to go (75 miles one way). It was very hard on the tranny (weak anyway) but it had plenty of power. I wish i had an extra cab or crew cab for towing. It would be much better. I hope to upgrade soon to a CTD and trailer.
