Since some of you are bitching about the tech content here lately, I thought I'd copy/paste a thread of mine I made on another board. If you don't like it, post your own tech. At least I'm tryin.

t-18 close to wide

Well I am in the middle of swapping wide ratio gears into my IH t-18. I found a good exploded view and a page instructing how to disassemble and reassemble the t-18. My big problem is how to remove the snap rings. They are a pain in the butt.

If anyone has any advice or questions feel free to post up.

"Good" snap ring pliers (without the removable tips) make a world of difference.

I found that out.

I'm having a problem getting second gear off the mainshaft. The snap ring is off, it turns, but it won't slide off. I used a deadblow hammer to pound on the end of the shaft and it moved a bit, but won't go back. This is the IH gear that needs to come off. The Ford gear came off no problem. Also, the third/fourth clutch hub doesn't seem to want to come off. I'd hate to put my stuff in a press and break it.

my mess
I can't seem to get all the gears off the mainshaft. I don't want to wreck the gear taking it off, but I really don't want to wreck the shaft. I guess I have to take it to a shop, but it's Sunday, (closed) :( and a holiday, (closed tomorrow) and I'm going nuts because I have all this time to work on the project and I'm at a standstill.

I don't have any usable place to do this, so I took everything apart outside. Last night it rained. :( This is most of the two trannys.

Well well well....It seems the transmission I bought isn't all perfect. :( I'm getting the gears off the mainshaft but its taking some force. I'm also finding out that it suffered from lack of lube and the shaft is galled up a little. So, do I run it with a bad shaft, try to fix the shaft, or find a new shaft? A Jeep t-18 to d20 kit from Advanced adapters is close to $500. So, I think I'm gonna talk to some tranny shops and see if they could get me a used one cheap, or know where to fix my bad one. If I didn't have a galled main shaft I'd be done by now , and working on swapping it in.

I did a search and emailed a place that does the searching for me, and got a few responses. The best was 125, and the worst was some $600. Yikes! I'm going to talk to a few people here in town and see what I can come up with.

Quick update... I bought a SII t-18 for the shaft. A guy I know is parting out a 74 and sold me the trans, t-case, and tailgate for $60.I pulled the trans myself and cut my right index bad, so it will be a few days before I tear this one apart. Then I'm off to build some clutch linkage.

Keep y'all posted.

Ok, update time. I already had the countershaft in the housing, so all I had to do was drop in the mainshaft. Not so easy. I pulled the mainshaft out of the donor trans and removed the gears from the front, and installed the low gears, then massaged it around until it went in. I didn't have tools to take out the reverse lever. Once in I found out that a gear that I thought was ok wasn't. It was too big. Out it came, then I slid the gears off the other end of the shaft. A note to do-it-yourselfers, the big gear at the rear of the shaft has spring loaded detents. DO NOT slide the outer ring off the inner piece, or the detents will fly away and be free. Getting them back in in a slow, painstaking process, but it can be done by one person. (I did it twice.)
After that, putting the shaft in was easier, thanks to the smaller gear that I just put on. The bearings went on, and I worked the shift rings around to check that I had all my gears . Everything seemed to be in order, so I put the top cover on and checked the gears again. Now everything works but reverse. Something has it bound/locked up. I'll mess around with it tomorrow. After I get that to work I'll work on clutch linkage.

I tooled around with it this morning and found that the bearing on my input shaft was too thick. I happened to have one that was a little thinner and put it in, it helped, but I found that my output shaft was too far back. I tried to shim it but I can't find anything the right size, so I "slid" the shaft forward a bit and put the top on. Everything works fine. One thing I am concerned about is the new input shaft is thicker by .070. I don't know if it will cause a problem or not. I have my fingers crossed. Pretty much it is done, I just have to find a garage or somewhere indoors to swap it in and build a new crossmember.

That's all the tech I have for now, unless you want a write up of putting tbi on my 304.

Ah man, thats just a puny 4 speed hand shaker! :flipoff2: I'm rebuilding the 6 speed out of my C5 and regearing the diff with 4.11s. What a bitch to regear and its $290.00 my cost for the gears. Bearings are another $300.00 :(
Hang in there. At the least your having fun. :)

Nothing has changed since then. The trans is still sitting in my shed. :(

I need a garage, shop, or somewhere I can swap it in that won't be a problem should it become long term storage. If I had the clutch linkage ready to bolt in it wouldn't be much of a problem, but I have cranky neighbors who will bitch to the city if they think it's undrivable.

Hey Matt,

I haven't forgot about you. The weather's been too crappy lately for pictures. :( I'll try to go to my buddy's ranch and shoot some digital pics of that linkage this weekend. I'll try to get some measurements too. None of the parts are all that complicated. You should be able to fab them up with no problem.

I picked up that I4 Scout 800 T18 bellhousing from NVScouter (what an adventure that was!) and am getting an I4 T18 from Binderbound. Now to dig out my Ford T18 and make enough space in the garage so I can make one T18 out of two (where did I put my snap ring pliers...) :grinpimp: Did you know that the I4 Scout 800 T18 bell to tranny bolt pattern is the same as the Jeep pickup/Waggy T98 and T18? After doing a little measuring, I just figured that out (I'm a little slow sometimes) :shaking: My bell housing also has undrilled bosses where bolts/studs for a V8 Scout 800/Scout II T18 or T19 would go. Seems strange that IH would use the Jeep pattern cases instead of the usual IH V8 cases. Someone deep within IHC must have been thinking the same thing, otherwise the bosses wouldn't be there...Standard IH Opperating Proceedure...

If a person had a long shaft 4X4 (maried) Jeep T18 or T98, they could swap short shaft Ford T18 or T98 (whichever's appropriate) input shaft into it (or cut the long Jeep input shaft to Scout 800 length), then use it with an I4 Scout 800 T18 bell. Of course most people get the I4 Scout 800 T18 WITH the bell... I've passed up a couple of Jeep 4x4 T18 and T98s, and I've seen SEVERAL Ford T98s at Pick'N'Pull. Oh well. I didn't have a bell housing until a couple of weeks ago anyway, and Binderbound's giving me a good deal on the Scout 800 I4 T18. I'll bet that O.S. and others are thinking, "why spend the time and money on that heavy pig of a 1/2 motor??? Better get the Turd Pollish!!! :flipoff2: " That doesn't bother me any, I enjoy the strange looks and the comments that driving something obscure brings. Eccentricity can be a fun illness!!! :massey:

Good luck with the A-Hole neighbors... To keep my neighbors from calling the landlord about "junk cars", I crank up my Travellette, drive it around the block a few times (spewing a smoke screen from burnin' valve cover gasket oil on the exhaust manifolds) and park it in a different spot in the front yard about once a month to show them it's driveable. :)
