: Drivetrain help...

After spending the holidays digging my 85 K20 Sub out of the snow in the eastern sierras, I am now looking to upgrade the drivetrain. I have the stock GovLock, which after 200k miles, I assume is now fixed open. Beyond that I would like to upgrade the diffs, but maintain driveability as this truck is meant for daily commuting and road trips, with a little offroading (mostly mud, sand or snow) at the end, and do it all at a decent price.

I have looked into the Detroit Truetrac(front) and Powertrax(rear) as they will help the traction without hurting the driveability too much. Problem is, I would have to reset ring and pinions on both ends and find a 10.5 open carrier to replace the GovLock.

Anyone have any ideas or recommendations? Does this sound like the way to go, or are there any other options out there?

Thanks for the help.

Get a detroit for the rear since you are going to have to replace the carrier anyways.

Does anyone have any experience with the Detroit Softlock? I heard it is stronger than the Powertrax and still provides the driveablility.

the soft locker is a joy to drive on the street compared to the old style. i would recamened the detroit because it will last alot longer than any other one.
