Need a little help please. My Scout had been a part time driver around a farm for a few years when I "rescued" it. I knew she needed a little work and ran rough. I have done the following;
Pulled head and had it rebuilt,w ith a valve job (pistons looked fine and where tight), new exhaust to org specs, new holley carb (like org). replaced all gaskets, new plugs (autolite), new plug wires, clean all connections to gold box. New fuel filter and all new vaccum hoses After work was completed she fired right up and carb was tweaked. Took out on I-road and she jumped up to 75 no problem.Gas flow seems aplenty. The problem is a misfire? I think, While cruising along anywhere from about 45 to 60 mph she will sometimes misfire or "skip abeat". It is not regular and doesn't happen under load. Makes a "boop sound" when it happens. Might happen several times in a row or may run 10 miles or so with out it happening. also will happen at idle. Any suggestions greatly apprecitated
Also is there a adjustment on the 4x4 lever? Goes into 4 low just fine. When I pull back into 4 high it will jump out when I let off the clutch.
Again thanks
Steve

Gold Box  possibly?

When mine was acting up, the truck would just shut off. Sometimes it would start, sometimes not.

Nowhere in your post did you mention replacing the cap and rotor.

Could also be a bad ground, or a loose connection. Either at the coil, ignition switch, bulkhead connector, etc. It might take time to find it.

Replacing the coil wouldn't be a bad idea either. Use your old one for a spare.

Use quality parts, STAY AWAY FROM AUTO ZONE :p !!!

My first thought is Distributor as well. Forgot about gold box as I've never had to deal with them :D

Check out www.binderbulletin.org more info over there as well (before you get flamed and beat down here, which you will. You post isn't "hardcore tech", but atleast it was intelegent and you included plenty of information. Read some other post and you can see what I mean).

As for the t-case.. check to see if the body is hitting the lever, or if there is something causeing it not to go all the way back (bunched up boot, small critter, etc).

If not, possibly worn detent springs (have to tear appart t-case) or just plain wear in the case (again, tear down). If all it does is move the lever and pop out... a bungee cord is your friend :D

Thanks guys, I searched binder bullentin looking for the same problem. I'm not a member there and I figured the folks here would be more helpful anyway. I've noticed a couple of threads where a newbie got flamed being too low-tech ha-ha. I'm toying around the idea of a V-8 swap. I would like a 289 HP Ford but I haven't seen it done. Anyway I'll tinker a little more this weekend and maybe put on a cap, rotor and coil.
Thanks again

  Sounds like you've done some reading before posting up.

Anyway...

Would you could you please take a pic of the power steering setup on your truck? I'm sure it's a little different than the setup in a baby scout with 152, but I need an idea on how the pump is mounted. If you can't post somewhere, email them to me homeskillet359@yahoo.com

Thanks a bunch.

Well its amazing what double checking wiring will do. I disconnected all the ignition wiring and I think it was a bad connection at the coil. seems to have cleared it up.
I'm going to put on a new coil anyway. I just found another '77 for sale with a bored over 392 and AT and AC. I'm going to check it out soon. ( Hey can't have too many binders right?)

Urban Wheeler I'll charge up the digital camera sometime this weekend and try to get a photo of my PS pump to you. It;s leaking but I think you can see how it's mounted OK
