: Heat Riser Blanks for RamsHorn Manifolds?

I want to put a new exhaust in my 350 powered FJ55, with ramshorn manifolds and a stock chevy crossover pipe.

The one that Texican showed us here

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62105

It took me a while, but I finally got the correct pair of 2" rams horn manifolds off ebay.

I am going to visit NAPA tomorrow to get the walker 42087 cross over pipe.

From reading the above threads I see that I will also need a pair "heat rise blanks". Can anyone tell me what application these are for, and where I might get some? Any chance I could get them at NAPA?

Thanks

Jared

PS-- Paging Texican--- If you are out there, in one of those threads I saw that had some of those heat riser blanks that you were willing to ship. Do you still have any? I tried to PM you, but your inbox was FULL.

I got mine form Texican. I never could find them at NAPA.

Well it is appears as though Texican is the best, and maybe only source for these things.

What do I need to do to get him to read this thread? Or at least clean out his inbox? :)

One? Do you only need one?

I am not really sure of the purpose of these things. From my reading of these threads I see that these things are blanks, that normally there is actually a valve in there. I also recall that the blanks were for EFI applications.

I actually have a Quadrajet on my FJ55. Would I be better of with a regular heat riser? What do they do anyway?

With Qjet and a heat riser you'll warm up better in cold weather - but only if you have the stock air cleaner AND the tin foil looking tube that goes from the heat riser to the air cleaner thermostat flip valve thing...

If you need a stock air cleaner, I have one.

I found one-- does this look that the heat riser blanks you got from Texican?

http://www.corvetteparts.com/details/iid/13213201.htm

They call these things "heat riser spacer"-- might be easier to find searching for that.

Thanks

That is it, you only need one, on the passenger side, otherwise the crossover will hit the pan......about the same money I get for them....... my supplier has been out for the last few weeks, so if they have one get it.

I emptied my PM box :flipoff2:

The heatriser closes when it is cold out. This forces hot air (exhaust) to go through a passage in the intake manifold (under the carb area). This heats the intake so the fuel will vaporize. It has a bi-metal spring on it, so when the engine warms up, it opens. This allows an almost free exhaust flow.

I put the TBI system on my Cruiser. The manifold doen't have a crossover, so I used the spacer (and the replacement heatriser is $$)

Ok, I got the Walker crossover at NAPA. I got the heat riser blank at the corvette parts link above. I got the ramshorn manifolds on ebay.

What else do I need?

I guess I will need new exhaust manifold gaskets and bolts. Anybody have a recommendation?

And I think I might need some sort of gasket or flange between between the heat riser blank and the ramshorn. Do I?

I have never done any exhaust work. I am hoping to put the manifolds and cross over myself, and then take it to a exhaust shop to connect it to the existing exhaust. We will see how well that works.

I gutted the heat riser in mine, and just plugged the hole. it might leak after a few years, but I'll deal... But it's better to get the blank...

You need the gasket between the manifold and blank, take the blank with ya to any good parts house and they will have it, run a straight edge over the manifolds and if the pass, bolt them up with a thin layer of hi heat silicone, no gaskets.........get grade 8 bolts and stainless flat washers for the manifold to head.....run a tap into the heads just to make sure the holes are not f'd up
We chop the flange off the bottom and weld 2 1/4" pipe from there out...about ready to do one this afternoon on Hoop's 40

I also went this route, cut the flap out with the torch and welded the hole shut. 2 years later and no problems so far
