2F/700R4/Atlas..
now I have to figure out which Atlas I want..
3.8, 4.3 or 5.0 :smokin:
cruiseroutfit 01-15-2005, 12:31 PM Who made the adapter?
Jason M 01-15-2005, 12:35 PM It is an old Downey Adapter that never reached production..
So one off basically.
there are some issues about it that need to be resolved (rear motor mounts and starter problems.
KOWBOY 01-15-2005, 04:08 PM Mace .... Mace .... Mace ....
What the hell are ya doin'?
As if your junk ain't got enough problems already. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

no shit kowpie!
i'd keep the atlas closer to the 3.8 ratio since your 2f makes a lot of torque and you're not gonna wind it up too high.
mount that plate up already with the flexplate and starter so we can figure out what needs to be done about the starter location.
Jason M 01-15-2005, 04:23 PM Baby sitting right now..
I'll get the spare 2F tomorrow morning, hit another junkyard to get a starter (if just for a core) and have pics by tomorrow afternoon of it instaled..
I will probably end up adding another motormount like this one to offset the span between the 2F front motor mounts and the tranny mounts.

lol
there are always more chickens to go shoot when the problems arise to make me feel better :)
If I can resolve the issues with this adapter I will try to get it in the cruiser next winter..
Advent Horizon 01-16-2005, 04:51 PM What the hell is it with you and turd polishing?
Also, why not go with an A440F? Wouldn't that be a lot easier/cheaper?
Jason M 01-16-2005, 07:54 PM WTF is an A440F??
this will be cheap (cept for the atlas) and strong.
Overdrive will be nice.
3.something first will be nice too.
Got pics of the adapter on.

It looks like one of the major reasons that there are starter issued is due to the location of the starter to the flexplate. I am thinking that I need to space out the Flexplate. Anyone happen to have a good mockup pic of how a stock 350/flexplate looks??

rustycruiser 01-16-2005, 07:59 PM WTF is an A440F??
A440F is the stock auto tranny found in FJ62s and FJ80 Land Cruisers. It would mate up easily to the 2F. It is quite stout (Toyota also used it in Coaster busses), but I don't know how you would adapt an Atlas to it.

I know too many people that have issues with the FJ80 autos..
I like the cheap american junk.

Wouldn't life be easier with out the BBQ power tractor motor? A cheap american junk motor would easily bolt up to the 700R4!
:D :flipoff2:
Jason M 01-16-2005, 08:16 PM That's turbo BBQ tractor motor to you mister...
:flipoff2:
What can I say.. I like novelties..
I think my wife does too. That is why she married me ;)
shaka 55 01-16-2005, 09:05 PM I was wondering about that adapter. If they only made one how did you get it?
Jason M 01-16-2005, 11:07 PM I asked.
wngrog 01-17-2005, 05:24 AM I really like having an Overdrive. I was thinking about it this weekend, especially now that I have a 3.8 Atlas, when we hit the logging roads between trails, I was in OD going about 1700 RPM. I bumped it into Drive to see the difference and I would have been up near 3K
One other use for an OD on a trail only vehicle.
Keep it up Mace!

Or perhaps, heaven forbid,
High Range! :D
wngrog 01-17-2005, 06:44 AM Have you ever felt the acceleraton of 350HP and 70:1 in an automatic?
green73 01-17-2005, 07:21 AM Did you properly fill out the "outside the box" application for TT? :flipoff2: Looks like alot of detail work needed for the conversion, but nothing that can't be overcame. Have fun with it!
blkdog40 01-17-2005, 08:40 AM Starter / anti-theft solution :)
orangefj45 01-17-2005, 09:36 AM i would be very hesitant about shimming the flexplate.
first thing you gotta do to figure out if shimming the flexplate is even an option is to bolt up a th700 eith a converter in it. then see how much room is between the flexplate and the converter mounting tabs (the three threaded bosses that bolt the converter to the flexplate) and then go from there. with the trans and converter installed, you should have between 1/4" and 3/8" freeplay between them. this means that when you go to bolt the converter to the flexplate, it has to move forward that amount to mate up.
i'd say mock those up first and post another pic, than we'll go from there.
Pin Head 01-17-2005, 10:09 AM Try shimming the starter first.
The starter isn't going to be a problem ...
If it is never going to run anyway. :flipoff2:
sixty 01-17-2005, 12:09 PM I'm glad you got it.... no get it put together & installed this winter!! that flexplate looks like a stock chevy to me but I'm sure orange would be able to tell you. you'll absolutely love the auto!
I think you may have a problem with mounts since the 2-bolt mount on the back of the trans is weak. once again orange will know better than me.
Was there a flexplate in all that stuff I gave you when I moved? I had one but cant remeber what happened to it. might still be at my old house. let me know & i'll have my bro look for it.
orangefj45 01-17-2005, 12:25 PM yup, that's a stock early gm V8 flexplate.
i think that rubbubg the starter like that will work, but the bendix is going to shoot out far enough to bottom out on the flexplate which in turn will cause premature flexplate/starter failures.
and put away that BFH!!!!! :flipoff2: that's no way to "clearance" the starter!
Jason M 01-17-2005, 03:51 PM i would be very hesitant about shimming the flexplate.

So I need a tranny now then right?
The flexplate is stock GM
I am going to strengthen the starter mount.. But not until I get the location igured out..
Sixty, Nop you never gave me a flexplate. If you had, I am sure that I would have looked at you funny. And I would feel like an ass for it now ;)
Orange, what is a good deal on a 700R4?
Got a killer deal sitting around??? ;)
Thanks guys..
orangefj45 01-17-2005, 05:45 PM yup, you need a trans. i can have one built for you. i'd say a decent deal on a used th700 would be $300-500. i do not like using a used automatic trans cause it's always a crap shoot. you can not do a full inspection on an auto without completely tearing it apart, unlike a standard where you can just pull the top cover to satisfy your curiosity.
if you do try to find a good used trans, look for a 4wd unit out of a 1988 thru 1992 full size gm. they offer all the best internal components and the strongest case, also known as the "auxillary valve body" style th700 or 4L60.
another thing to keep in mind is the output shaft on a conversion like this. normally, to do a conversion you have to change the output shaft on the auto. this means you have to completely dis-assemble the trans. at that time, you can do a thorough inspection of a good used unit.
see what happens when you "can't leave good enough alone"?! :flipoff2:
woody 01-17-2005, 06:29 PM between my free core, $250 in labor, and a bunch of well priced and high quality parts (puhpuhpuhpimp!!) from Georg, I'm into mine for under $1000....all the good stuff and a full manual valve body (trans have everything but the reverse full manual) Most local shops wanted $1350 for a redone one, and I was unsure of their parts list. (couldn't nail down ALL the details)
I used to know a tranny builder in Vegas, but he and his wife (C's sister) just moved to Boulder-CO area....
Jason M 01-18-2005, 08:46 AM Thanks Woody,
I am going to try to rebuild the tranny myself. the adapter between the tranny and Atlas will be one of the sunray ones so a replacment output shaft will be in the works.
Orange, which years are the nonquasi computer controled 700R4's?
And is a late 80's camaro a good doner?? Or is getting one from a pickup a stronger unit???
orangefj45 01-18-2005, 09:39 AM i'd get one out of a 88 thru 92 4wd V8 pickup. the cases are a bit stronger if you run them in conjunction with the cast aluminum inspection cover, although you'll have to fab your own strutts to utilize it to it's maximum "beef". :)
Jason M 01-19-2005, 08:17 AM What are Struts??
Stupid frnch jackasS 01-19-2005, 08:40 AM Have you ever felt the acceleraton of 350HP and 70:1 in an automatic?
equals about ~10 ton thrust :D
way yo go Nolen :grinpimp:
orangefj45 01-19-2005, 12:38 PM What are Struts??
we'll worry about those later, son! :flipoff2:
i'll dig up an exploded view from gm and scan it so you can visualize what they are, what they do and what you need to fab up. not super important rightnow.
