I have a 92 yj, 4.0 that is having some problems. I have dealt with it for a while since it is not my DD. I have searched and have not found anything substantial.

The problem is coming from the very front of the engine behind the harmonic balancer. It is ticking noise that increases with engine speed. However it goes away when the clutch is in. Not only does it tick like an exhaust leak but it is causing the belt to squeek now.

What i want to know is has anyone else had this happen to them and how did they remedy the problem. Could it be as easy as a new balancer? Thanks in advance.

The Newbie.

Harmonic balancers are notorious for coming apart on 4.0's They will usually walk into the timing cover and make the serp belt squeal. Pushing in the clutch and making it go away sounds like you also have a crankshaft thrust problem. Might want to check that also.
