im putting together a 91YJ..as of right now ive got a 31 spline 9"..and in search of a 44 or hp60 front...the 44 i have now is junk for front leaf springs...(78 bronco cast wedge)..im selling it...i was going to put coils up front also but decided to stick with the leaf's.....i dont plan on running anything over 37-38"...trying to keep everything light so i chopped the rear tub, front fenders and im moving the tank behind the seats to stretch it ...with not much weight in the rear (spare tire and minimal cage)...what coils should i run...this isnt my DD so im looking for lots of flex and ive spooled the rear....without running a trac bar ...what link set up works the best...double triangulated 4 link is what im thinking...but my buddy with a TJ 3 link works fine......any ideas on the front 44/hp60...id like to run a strong 44 to save weight and ground clearance...also anybody running the 31 spline 9" and 37-38"'s ..does it hold up or should i go 35 spline..the toughest trails this rig will see would be Telico....any info, anybody close to boone, nc with a 44 for sale
thanks/Lane

The 9" should hold up fine. I have a yj with a AMC 360,4:3:1 atlas with a 28 spline 9" and a d44 frt. With 37" tires, went to tellico 3 months ago everything held up. so you should be ok with 31 spl. Unless you use the saying "point it and punch it".

To get by cheap I would use stock ft Tj 4 cyl coils in the rear. They work great and if you need a bit more you can go to the 6 cyl springs. Lots of them laying around cheap. I am running 6 cyl in mine..
For the rear, my advice would be 4 link. single or double triangulated depending on how comfortable you are with suspension setup.
Use the board here, there is tons of good info to be had with a search.
31 spline is fine for a good driver, I am running 31 spline/ spool with 38.5 sx's for the last few years, and have just upgraded to 39.5 Irok Radials.
Hope this helps. Have fun.. :)

air shocks and a 3 link in the rear.... to go from big bearing 31 spline to 35 spline isnt that tough and the piece of mind is well worth the coin... just dont forget to truss it and plate the bottom of the housing.

My good friend Chris did a nice job converting his YJ rear axle to coils. You may want to call or email him for info if you'd like.

My first was a Black Diamond XCL and it is awesome as it combines a rare characteristic: It rides as good on the street and on the trail.
It can be improved though (my second)
1.- Use a flat plate for transfer support and suspension suport that does not need to have all suspension removed to change a clutch.
2.- Cut the tub to fit longer shocks/springs
3.- Use johnnie joints in the chassis links so the new shock travel is used fully.
4.- Keep the geometry of the XCL
I have found that most rear coil suspensions tend to have less traction than leafs. When somebody builds one without a lot of thinking it ends up no climbing things he climbed before. You donīt see that in the pice pics they post....
Take your time.... see the long list of designs that are used IN COMPETITION and use the four link calculator. Check UROC and CalRocs page for designs...they canīt afford a bad design.
I decided to install the BD XCL because in Spain where I live it is fairly difficult to build anything... and more from scratch , as it has to be legalized. Engineers from the DOT like a kit that is sold to many customers, because it means that it "does not break".
From all the kits on sale the most used in competition was the XCL !!!
A good starting point.
