: Carbide wheel chop saws, WOW!
pmurf1 02-12-2002, 06:41 PM Got to use a Porter Cable one today, holy shit are those cool! Makes my 14" Ridgid seem like a dinosaur. Cut a piece of 3/4" solid rod in about a second or two. Hardly any heat, burr free cut and no dust. I was amazed how quiet it was compared to a chop saw. Wouldn't need to wear hearing protection when doing cuts anymore.
The rep said that there were no retrofit blades, but for some reason I remember people saying there were, albeit expensive. The saw was $550, so it ain't cheap either. Anyone know if you can get regular high speed blades for them and how much? Does the increased speed of standard chop saws chew them up?
Toy 4Runner Man 02-12-2002, 06:44 PM At the fab shop I use to work at had a carbide blade wet saw. it was a cool thing, until the teeth started coming off!
ErikB 02-13-2002, 11:11 AM The reconditioned DeWalts can be had for $199 from Harbor Freight and Northern Tool.
Mine doesn't seem that quiet though? Maybe its quiet compared to an abrasive...?
It also depends what I cut though. Some things seem to make the blade "ring."
The blade only spins at like 1700 rpm or so, I think any faster and it would get chewed up...
no i don't think there are any retro fit blades that work on a abrasive saw.
fyi i have the dewalt and it is night and day compared to a abrasive. well worth the money
Old Scout 02-13-2002, 11:21 AM I bought a Re con De-Walt from northern tool. The thing was FUBAR before I even before I used it once. It had a motor problem and pulled 30 amps on start up. De- Walt gave me a brand new one and a free extra blade!
Cant beat a company standing behind their products... even reconditioned ones! I think I know what Im ordering
ErikB 02-13-2002, 03:00 PM My recon one was FUBARed too. The blade turned backwards and killed the blade...
They sent me a brand new one (not reconditioned) no questions asked. :D
But no extra free extra blade for me. :emb:

Go to HF's site, find the part # & write it down, click on "order from print catalog" or whatever it is, enter the previous part # but change the "0vga" part to "1vga" (or vice-versa). Price comes to $199, (plus CA tax and a ~$4 handling fee which is still cheaper than shipping from NT). :)
And thanks for the tip on the free blade! I'll have to try that! :D
ToyFamily 02-17-2002, 04:14 PM Fawk...I payed 179 for my chop saw! I wish I knew about this a while ago....

Old Scout, what's the address to mail the coupon to?
Free shipping coupon good till march 28th
982-866-644
steveh 02-28-2002, 06:42 PM If you do it the way Erikb outlined, it is free shipping and $30 less! $199 Vs. $229
If you do it my way its 211 out the door, shipped.
$189 for the saw, bout $17 in tax and $5 for handling
Jaffer 03-01-2002, 07:40 AM I almost ordered one when this subject came up a few months ago but decided this morning to jump on it ...
The on-line order form would not take the free shipping coupon using either the 1 vga or the 2 vga numbers.
The 5514-2VGA number is the one for $ 189.00 ;)
So I called it in hoping to use the shipping coupon PLUS the lowest price code.
No problem ... I got free shipping without even asking for it!
Total to my business' door in NM is $ 195.92
$ 5 bucks handling ... but no TAX!
Only one hitch ... they are backordered untill March 15.
Humm... how do you backorder a reconditioned unit???
Are there SOOO many duds of these which need "reconditioning" that is a continuous supply flow???
We'll, anyway if it's still a dud it sounds like I'll get a brand new one when returned to DeWalt.
Thanks for the tips, guys... :smokin:

Adam,
davefj40 03-01-2002, 11:20 AM anybody have any problems with the blades dulling quick? my buddy does construction for a living and they bought these to cut metal framing studs and they stopped using them because the blades dulled to quick. it's cheaper for them to keep using the abrasive chop saws. just wondering if it was something they were doing wrong and maybe i can pick one of these up for cheap from there shop.
dave
KYODER 03-01-2002, 01:03 PM Those things might cut faster. But in the end it is still cheaper to go with an abrasive. Ask 66CJDEAN how many times he has had to sharpen the teeth or have them replaced. For solid material they are the bomb.

The manual it comes with says not to cut anything thicker than .120" or .100", so that may be your problem... Works better for the thicker stuff....
ErikB 03-01-2002, 04:05 PM BTW, if you call the Cust. service # on Dewalts web site, they will send you the coupon for the free blade. Not sure if it applies to the Recon units or not. It doesn't say on the coupon.
