Have an 86' chevy sub with the 6.2. Changed out radiators but the threads for the oil cooler lines are stripped out. Can I remove the lines and put plugs in the oil filter base?

I don't tow anything with this rig and live in flat country so hills are not an issue. But didn't know if the plugs would screw up oil flow inside the engine.

Thanks

Yes and no. According the the factory service manual there are oil bypass valves which will open up if there is too much of a restriction in the oil cooler. So if you plug it up, the bypass valves should kick in.

Is it a good idea? Probably not.

Worst case, a new radiator is ~$200 from a shop, or less if you pull it from a yard. I even have a spare sitting in my yard that only needs a little patching, if you're anywhere close to here...

you can cheat!
all you need is the cooler out of a radiator tank. hook it to the lines and secure it out of the way.

That tells me what I need to know. I'll probably plumb in a seperate cooler. A cooler in the radiator always made me nervous about the possibility of fluids mixing.

Thanks for the help guys.

I have been running my turbo 6.2 for 6 months now with out the cooler hooked up ( sucker started to drip - leak so i removed and put plugs) no problems yet but i do notice i only have 40 # were i used to run 50 - 60 # psi because of the previous answers i am gonna buy new lines and hook up a good external like they do on the big blocks

Later model CK's have external coolers.
However the factory lines suk, don't use them.

Real hydrualic lines are best.

Late '97 the hardware switched from 1/2" to 5/8 when the oil spray blocks were introduced.
