: Recreating full stuff ?'s

So as I am trimming to fit the new 36's and planning for future 39's+ I struck an arc off center of hub w/ a 22" radius. This theoretically gives me 12" clear around the tire. My question is... how much do I really need to trim? We tried very hard to create full stuff in the shop. I know however that we still had some more flex to go. With the springs at neg arch we have plenty of room for the 36's on the rear. On the front I think we have plenty in front of the tire, and we aren't quite done by the firewall yet. I am questioning it because looking at everyone else's rigs that have been trimmed it seems like they took a lot more material than I did. So......

Is there a way to definitely create full stuff in the shop w/out chaining the axle to the floor. The only method we came up with that would definitely work would be to chain the frame to the floor and then jack up the diff's 1 corner at a time. I just know I would forget about the bolts and drive right over 1 and pop my new tires.

Here's a couple of pics....

Thanks,
KZ

  Want to stuff the right rear, just lift the left front! :flipoff2:

I have soa with stock spings and a 2" body lift with 38.5 sx's. I have trimmed quite a bit and only rub on the firewall. I am going to cut out the seem and arch and smooth it out. That should fix it. 36's shouldn't be a problem though.

Yea that doesn't do it. You ever done that? That does not recreate what the trail does to your suspension. What we did to get close was...
We jacked up the rear diff (the one we wanted to stuff) and put a jack stand under the driver's corner, then we jacked up the frame on the front pass. side. This stuffs it quite a bit, but not all the way as was evident when my buddy got in the back and it stuffed another 5/8".

Try again :flipoff2:

OH yea....SOA stock arch springs, 2" body lift on a Terra (44f 60r)

Well, that is his rig in the pic :flipoff2: and it looks like it's on the trail.

OK so it is his rig, and yes it is on the trail. What does that say about anything? I asked about in the shop right... I don't want to find out the hard way that I have more to remove.
I am not picking a fight, just trying to keep things relevant to my post :flipoff2: Simply lifting the opposing corner doesn't accomplish what I need and pointing out that his rig is on the trail does nothing more than prove you are sarchastic.

Are you dense? Lift front tire=other tire compresses  . Then wheel your junk and if it still rubs, use a fawkin sawzall.

Is there a forklift near by?

I hook a Come-along to the frame and to the axle, and crank it down until I'm on the bump stop..

Thanks Tom.I will try that. Not sure why I hadn't thought of that, maybe I am dense :D

The rest of you can piss off. You are dense if you truly believe that will recreate the forces experienced on the trail. Yea the forklift gets it a lot closer, but still not all the way.

Sawzalls are one of the greatest tools ever, but I hate the meat hooks and knife edges left over. I am trying to get it right the first time (or third) but really don't wanna trash the new tires. I guess if you are as rich as you guys seem to be you can afford to cut the piss out of a set and buy some new ones. I am not so fortunate and have to make my tires last.

Ever ask the guy at the lumber yard for some "Simpson ID10t brackets? great fun!
Thanks for nothin'

Holy christ Nancy...If your worried about your tires getting trashed, stick to the parking lot :shaking:

I run 37's with SOA and a 2" BL. I moved the rear back an inch and the front forward 3/4". I moved the front with a stick in spacer from an online vendor. Works great. I only run the front fender a little full stuff and turning on trails...still needs trimming..but I miss the firewall a ton now.

We flexed mine out with a forklift when it had 35's (gumbos)and they are lots shorter than the 37's I have now (mtr's).

I think you’re going to be surprised when you mount the 39s and go wheeling. It is going to rub in places that you thought were safe. I do not know how much lift and so on that you have, but you will have rubbing and binding that cannot be duplicated at the shop. Like dropping off White Knuckle Hill in Moab. Or the Waterfall and the A-hole on Patriot in Penrose, Co. :D
I actually take an 800-watt power inverter and my Sawzall. It took a few runs to get the major rubbing down to a minimum. I am also minimalists with lifts though. I prefer to keep it low as possible. :)

Well now I really do feel dense. I can bring the cordless my first time out and trim in the field! I certainly agree about the 39's. I am hoping that with the 36's I can skate on by, but by the time I am ready for the 39's (or bigger) the body will be so trashed it won't matter. I know a few trails around here that shift your weight and flex your springs in ways my feeble nancy boy brain can't imagine, let alone recreate. So far I think the com-a-long idea will get me the closest until I actually hit the trail.

Call me Nancy one more time and I am gonna need a hug :crybaby2:

Flexing it out on a ramp or fork-lift is about the closest you can get in a shop environment. Flex it up as much as you can, then put a come-along on it and pull it down as much as you can... then trim more than you think.... just like the others said (and you said) the real off-road dynamics with momentum and gravity will flex it more than you can statically in the shop.

trial and error, or gross over cutting.

FYI, if you want to shop-stuff the front, lift the rear, if you want to stuff the rear, lift the front.

Thanks buddy. I certainly understand and agree with the front to stuff the rear thing even if I am a dense id10t. My only point is that doesn't account for gravity, momentum, or axle wrap. Obviously the best solution for that stuff is fix the axle wrap and over cut the rest. I'll keep you guys posted just so y'all can flame me when it don't work.
