: Spare tire carrier latch
COLOCRUISER 01-23-2005, 05:12 PM I built a Spare tire carrier for my fj60 land cruiser, but am having a hard time finding a latch to secure the swing out. Has anyone ever built a spare tire carrier with a swing out before and found a good way to latch it down.

smurfblue40 01-23-2005, 08:44 PM A company by the name "DE-STA-CO" makes an assortment of
those type of latches (I think they're called "Draw latches")
I've found them on several web sites (mostly industrial hardware)

65SWB45 01-23-2005, 11:21 PM Somebody asked this question about 6 months ago and cruiserbrett knew of a real good source. If he doesn't pipe up on this thread AND you can't find it with a thread search [you DID try that, didn't you] then PM him.
helocat 01-24-2005, 12:02 AM I have three kinds in stock for the carriers I build. All are 2000 lbs rated, non-locking ($), locking ($$) to US Navy Spec. Mil grade stainless locking.($$$) Nice.
Shoot me an e-mail and I can set you up with some prices if you wish. mark@metaltechcage.com

Foxfab 01-24-2005, 04:32 AM I use DeSta co latches for all of the stuff I build. The stainless stuff is real nice.
Box Rocket 01-24-2005, 06:53 AM Carr-Lane has a large selection of different latches. I got this one from them. 2000lb capacity.

Already been researching. They also have 90 degree and safety latches (with a secondary handle)

AVS60/40SPLIT 01-24-2005, 07:21 AM rear nissan pathfinder spare carrier, those already have a latch built into them, all you need is a striker that the latch hooks to,built the bumper around the carrier, worked pretty good.it'll carry whatever size tire you want.if i had my truck today i'd take a pic of it. will try to post one for you asap.

Yep. www.mcmaster.com

search for "lock pin" for cool weld in spring loaded pins to hold the carrier open.

Here's an old picture of my truck:

I currently have a 33 on it and it works fine. A jerry can also fits nicely on the right of the tire.
haystax 01-24-2005, 10:12 AM www.allegiscorp.com also has a buttload of hardware from many manufacturers, they also have all the gas shocks and hardware if you want to use one of those for a hold open device, they have some heavy duty (150#) if i remember correctly.
www.useenco.com and www.mscdirect.com along with others listed above probably have a couple pallets of everything ever made since the beginning of time.

modified brkts and bumper, works fine. :D
Tankota 01-24-2005, 05:19 PM A bolt secured to the body but sticking through the body from inside the fenderwell which protrudes through a hole in the end of the tire carrier and a big wing nut. Has worked fine for about 10 years. e-mail if you want pics. Oh yah, started with a 33", then a 35", then a 36", now a 38.5" on it.
Vortec_Cruiser 01-25-2005, 01:56 PM Here's my solution, and it's extremely strong. The pin extends down into the bumper.
AVS60/40SPLIT 02-01-2005, 01:08 PM with the carrier i built.....
JasonH 02-02-2005, 07:13 AM This works well too as long as you don't have to open and close it a lot - just cause it's a lot slower than a latch.
