: Transfer case maintenance

I have recently purchased a 1972 fj40 with 305 conversion, saginaw power steering, and a fiberglass body. At this point I'm going through routine maintenance and checking for basic safety and function. I'm concerned about prior maintenance for this truck since finding that the brake fluid looked like motor oil (flecks and chunks of crud in the brake lines), the motor was 1.5 quarts low with the wrong type of crush ring on the oil pan drain bolt, and many greasable areas in the drive train were completely dry. One other area of concern is the transfer case, and I was wondering what folks are using for trans oil. This truck is a 3-speed with the original transmission.

Any assistance or further advice on maintenance is appreciated.

Check fluid level in tranny and t-case.

Are they both full for starters?

90W gear oil, or 75-90...

Yep, definetely do a tune-up and replace all the fluids just so you will know what is in there and has been done recently. I use moble 1 for the engine and castrol on the transfer case and on my rust bucket I use Castrol brand on everything. There are other good brands but I have always used Castrol.
