: Rearend swap
TravisW-SII 02-13-2002, 12:19 PM I'm planning on doing a springover and swapping to 38"- 39" tires. I need some ideas on if the rearend will hold up to this or not. I have a Scout II, Dana 44 frontend and rearend, 345, Tourqflight. Will doing the warn full floater rear kit work or do I need to just try and find a D60 or 14 bolt? I really don't want the added cost of a one ton front axle( to make front & rear same width) as they are getting very costly.
JoshC 02-13-2002, 12:49 PM I just put 38's under my SII. I run D44's at 4:10. I havn't "tested" it out yet. I have one spare set of axles and I'm hoping that gets me through swapping my rear. I want a 14bolt! I read the "60 vs. 14bolt myth or?" in the general forum. The dually with discs looks saweet. And chaeep!
Monkeyboy 02-13-2002, 01:06 PM Looks good Josh.
I just got my locker and gears. Oh and a bender of my own with a 2"die. We can do some tube sculpting for our rigs now :D
Scout Dude 02-13-2002, 01:07 PM Damn Josh..when did you get 38's? I still stuck with my 6's until I make some mo-money. Are those the 12.5's or 14.5's?
Travis,
Check into the 33spline axles for your 44 and don't gear it beyond 4.56 and your pinion "should" live. Oh, and don't go beyond 38's. Just my opinion

Monkeyboy 02-13-2002, 01:24 PM Doh sorry I was wondering why yo uhadn't responded :D:rasta:
TravisW-SII 02-13-2002, 01:24 PM I will check into those 33 spliners. A friend of mine with a Toy told me of another option of going with a 9" out of a E Bronc or maybe out of a Lincoln. Should be close to the right width. He said that you can get some crazy sized shafts for those things. Just trying to find ideas for when this happens. Thanks for the info
Monkeyboy 02-13-2002, 01:27 PM PM should work now :D

"Easiest" solution would be something like the Dana 60-2 out of a Travelall. Around 2" wider. Still just a 30sp axle.
You'd get the stronger R&P if that's what you were breaking.. and if you're breaking axle shafts, you can order up 35sp 1.5" 'shafts for it (and a new locker to match)
Truss it though. Most of the people I've talked to say you're better off starting with a FF 60 and cutting it down and making it SF like OldScout did. The 60-2 housings are weaker than the FF 60 stuff.
Another point to consider.. do you know how poorly a SII turns with 38" tires on a stock width front axle? It pretty much doesn't. I've driven a stock sprung Scout II with stock Dana 44s and 38x11" Boggers (no lift, tire clearance provided by the Plasma Cutter).
it goes straight great. It does NOT turn.

It does look good, doesn't it? :flipoff2:
12.5's... and they are SX's and measure about 36" under weight.
Scout Dude 02-13-2002, 01:33 PM Yeah, you can get 35 spline axles for the 9" which are the same as some 60's and all D70's..however, you should call someone about that first. you may need the big bearing design and the early broncs used the smaller bearing I think. Call Mark Williams (http://www.markwilliams.com/) for good info..but buy from somewhere else..they are too expensive.

I'm patiently waiting for the easiest solution. Full width GM 1 ton. I did find a junk yard the other day with 8 or 9 trucks/vans with rear D60's. I also saw a funky little red Rockwell rear-end. Any ideas for uses for it?
Monkeyboy 02-13-2002, 01:39 PM Josh what yard is that

I would say "Saturday", but I have been saying that to myself for three weeks now. :rasta:

I'll tell you for $300 bucks! Come on out this Sat! Get Joe to come with you. Make sure he brings his spindle socket and ball-joint press.
Joe, You gonna see if you can get permission to come out and play for a couple hours?

Easiest solution if you want to stay near stock width and 5 on 5.5..
Not that anyone here wants to do that.. :D
Monkeyboy 02-13-2002, 01:46 PM I'm going to be out at mikes on Sat. I'm going to be picking up an extra set of D44 outers for my heep.
There is an OK In Oakley is that the one you went to. :D
Maybe SUnday I can make it
Or monday if the place is open.

I used a 3" lift mainleaf with the rest of the leaves from a stock pack. I think I got about 2" addl lift. I hope it flexes! I still have a couple things to do over the "weekend"...
Shocks
Front Driveshaft
Clearance fenders
Shock mounts
Spring plate
Extended brake lines
Short line extension
Centering pins
Rebuild pass. Side knuckle
Move exhaust
Swap T-case?
Tie Rod
Re-weld rear spring pads
Re-build pass. Side front axle
Install power steering cooler
Re-enforce rear body mounts
Weld rear spiders (rear)
Tighten steering u-joint
Lube all
Change fluids
Charge battery
Fan shroud
Bumper mounts/bumper

TravisW-SII 02-13-2002, 03:56 PM At the risk of soundind stupid. What is the difference between a FF 60, SF 60 , or the 60-2. I thought that even the 3/4 ton dana 60's were the same as the one tons. I do have a chance of a 3/4 ton D44 & D60 out of the same Dodge.

OK, not that I got that overwith..FF=Full Float SF= Semi float..more definition will require you to search...probably in the general 4x4 area. 60-2 is a semi float 60 that has the 44 tubes-2.75" 1/4"thick. Most people shy away from these because of the thin (Compared to other 60's) wall. NOT ALL SF 60's ARE 60-2....;)

Thanks Ben.
TravisW-SII 02-13-2002, 05:04 PM I do understand what semi float and full floating axles are, but I didn't know that there is a Semi floating Dana 60, so I guess thats why the Abb. threw me off. The D60 on on the 3/4 ton Dodge is a FF but is there any other differences in the internals between 1 & 3/4 ton 60's? I'm assuming that the carriers are the same.
Hayraker 02-13-2002, 05:22 PM There is a FF 60HD and a FF60, Not much difference really, a little thicker housing and the possibility of 35 spline shafts with the HD.
Both have been used in 3/4 tons, 1 tons usually have something bigger than a 60 in the rear, i.e. 14 bolt for G.M., d70 & d80 for the Dodge (some in the eighties had 60's), and big ass Eatons in Fords(who used SF60's in their 3/4 tons for a while, FF was an option, and standard on diesels during the eighties)
I'm positive that "SOME" of this info is correct.:D
