I am looking into buying 1/2 ton running gear out of a 78 Chevy. What gear ratio was stock in the 1/2 ton D44 and 12 bolt rear? i did some searching, but came up with nothing real specific. thanks.

3.07, 3.40, 3.73. All common possibilities from the factory. Could be a 10-bolt front instead of a D44 also in '78.

what transmission?
i have an 80 w/ 4 spd/205...it has factory 267 gears(will climb a tree in granny& 4lo & run 80mph highway in 2 hi w/no problem)
also, 78 w/350 auto/203 it has factory 373
have also found 342's.
411's usally were in 3/4 or 1 ton-& almost all factory 6 cylinder trucks.
i,ve also found 342?.

the axles are coming out of a 78 1/2 ton 4X4. 350/granny 4 speed/203. i think its a 203 t-case, but not positive.

Anything lower than 3.73 is not very common in 1/2 tons, at least if it's factory stuff. 3.08, 3.42, and 3.73 are all possibilities.

If it's a 4-speed from a '78, you're probably looking at a 205 T-case. 203's were pretty much just used with automatics except in '73 & maybe '74.
