: Landcruiser V8 vs 2F gas mileage
LCexplorer 02-13-2002, 01:54 PM I am currently debating which way I should go with my cruiser in terms of the engine. An important aspect would be fuel mileage. I will be running 33" tires on 4.10 soon. I have a Holley projection that could be used on either motor. The difference is that I can get an overdrive for either motor (28% overdrive for the 350 and a H55 for the 2F). What kind of mileage could I expect from either set up?
I didn't do an overdrive. I changed to a 327 with an automatic trans (TH350). I got 2 MPG beter than my F engine and I smiled when I wanted the power and floored it:D

DaveWFO 02-13-2002, 02:59 PM I swapped a 2000 5.3 and 4L60E out of Silverado truck and am getting 16 - 18 MPG with 300 HP ! hehehehe
Just posted a page on swap info,
http://home.attbi.com/~rittiman2/Cruiser/index.htm
i swaped from an F to a 327 then to a HP350 and get the same milage only WAY more power. I have an H55F also (might be for sale with adapters and cross members) and i fly on the freeway. I got 10 mpg towing a cj2a going 90mph on the freeway.
it was the best mod i have ever done to my cruiser.
if you do go 350 just get a vortec 350 with fuel injection on it and leave everything stock. i don't like my HP350 as much as my stock 327. (for wheeling)
DaveWFO 02-13-2002, 03:18 PM TRD, I know what you mean about keeping it stock, When I first started out I built up a trick 383 that had tons of HP, but it sucked gas and ran like shit up at altitude ( i.e the Con ) So I 86ed the HP 383 and got a hold of the 5.3 and it has 285 HP stock and gets killer gas milage and has tons of torque and it quite!
383 Hp 350 10 mpg
Gen III 5.3 ( 325 ) Hp 285 16 - 18 mpg
Dave
exactly. i am going to convert my HP 350 to fuel injection with vortec heads and buy i have an almost stock cam to put back in then i should be in good shape.
RustyNailJustin 02-13-2002, 03:23 PM I ditched the boat anchor 2F and swaped in a 1990 TBI 5.7 and I love it 16 to 18 MPG and not to mintion it actually gets out of it own way now!! Really fun to drive.
reorx 02-13-2002, 05:01 PM Well, I swapped in the TBI injection in my truck and of course I don't have any good gas mileage numbers, because its only been driven off-road! I will let you know how it goes.
If you WANT a V8, go ahead and rip everything out and wire it in. Otherwise, if you have a budget (like me) the TBI 4.2L 2F gets me gobs more power than the carb'ed (and smogged) motor. I am right at $1000 for the entire conversion. No money got to Advance Adapters either! :D
The mileage may be the same but the overall power of a bare bones sbc THROUGH THE WHOLE RPM RANGE is crazy better than a 2F.
I will be the first to admit I like the 2F for low end rock crawlin grunt, reliability, and stock simplicity, and a good stock carb.
If I had a good 2F and I was mainly crawling, I would put new gaskets on, SM420, and hit the trail. Simple, reliable, and effective, stock motor does not run hot, and the good running stock carb is pretty damn good on the rocks.
Just my advice after doing two V8 swaps......sometimes stock is not sooo bad.

Screwzer 02-14-2002, 12:09 PM Gotta agree with KMAN. Stock ain't so bad. I'm running a well tuned and cleaned up 2F in my 55. Yeah, its a bit slow, especially with 33's and the stock 4:10 axles, but hey, just light up a bowl :smokin: and chill dude! You'll get to the trail eventually. Does wonders for your attitude. Once on the trail, you still got plenty of grunt to get you where you wanna go.
Course, I'm just a simple country boy that doesn't have to deal with rush hour traffic every day.
2 each his own.

I would agree about most of this cause the 2F is a bad ass motor for putting around and it is really reliable but I think the benifits of a small block out weigh the 2F by far.
rigez 02-14-2002, 06:24 PM I'm going with the 2F in my 72 because its cheaper to do and if I'm real lazy I can get it worked on at the Toyota dealership. I'm currently having the engine rebuilt with a Clifford Performance cam and get it punched out just enough to give it some extra pwr for the 35s I want to run.
First thing you should ask yourself is what you are going to use your cruzr for. If you are just going to go wheeling go with the 2F if this is going to be multi purpose and you have the $$$$$ go for the V8 swap.
rigez 02-14-2002, 06:30 PM I forgot Clifford Performance makes a Fuel Injection conversion kit for the 2F as well. I plan on putting that on later in project build. Should improve gas milage a little.
EricFJ40 02-14-2002, 10:26 PM Well, if it's any indication for you, I am getting somewhat better mileage with my TBI 454 than what my stock six got. The main problem I have had is that I need to learn to quit driving it like it's a six cylinder, If you give it much gas it just goes sideways:eek: , and that's with 39.5's and 4.10 gears. It is nice to be able to pull any hill on the road in fourth gear at 60+ and not even have to work at it.
morgan 02-14-2002, 10:44 PM I like my 2F. My FJ55 weighs 6200 loaded for the trail, and I go butt-slow up road grades. I got 10mpg coming back across Nevada from Cruise Moab.
But I dig my 2F! It is great on the trail, and I love the way it sounds.

LCexplorer 02-15-2002, 12:05 AM Actually I am pretty lucky when it comes to vehicles as I can borrow just about anything for most purposes. My cruiser use will be on the trail, camping and towing the occasional 19' boat. I don't really need gobs of power for towing as I have a cummins for the heavy stuff and no need for a hot rod as I have a '72 Challenger for that. Too bad as I have a marine 454 (330 hp stock) that needs a new home.
What I am looking for is a reliable cruiser that will cruise down the highway without sounding like it's going to fall apart, wheel decently and not break the bank with crappy gas mileage (like less than 10 mpg). My current 2F has a header and Pertronix kit. What I wanted to ad additionally is an Offenhauser intake and Holley projection. As I have never run 33" with my 4.11 I wanted to see people's thoughts and experiences about the subject. My future will probably include a spring over and 35" tires. I thank everybody to this point for there help and keep the good info coming.

rogueturtle 02-15-2002, 08:18 PM 292chevy. Longer stroke-more torque than a 2f. Lotsa performance stuff if you need more hp- for $90and a cam grind alone will bump the hp 30%. Lotsa aftermarket stuff to get more hp if you need it. Im getting 13-16mpg on a 200k leaky-bad rings-120compression one. Runs at 180degrees on a 95degree california day. $800bucks and your low compression rebuild will run for another 250k. Just another bang for the buck $100 engine option to confuse you.
That is a fact, a 292 can be found dirt cheap.
