: Vibes after 35mph.
RaisedRover91 01-27-2005, 09:47 AM A little background, I was driving at about 70 mph and lost a trans cooler line and most the fluid in the tranny. Stopped before the trans went re filled and fixed the line and was on my way with the trans running better than before(went 150 miles home). The truck has ben driven on and off for the last week with no abuse and the thing started vibrating at 35mph and above.
New panahrd rod bushing, u joints, bearings have been repacked with 500 miles and still looked good, everything looks good and tight.
Is the trans of t-case on the way out?

PTSchram 01-28-2005, 07:02 AM What, another Rover in Houghton? Where were you when we got lost out on the keewenaw?
As for the vibes, do you have big chunks of ice on the wheels? Perhaps lost a balancing weight? While returning from a Christmas function (non-offensive seasonal celebration for those who might take umbrage at Christmas), after parking in a snow bank, the truck began to act just as you describe. After I kicked the ice out of the wheels, it was back to normal (acceptable vibes :flipoff2:)
I don't know that I'd convict the T-case just yet.
Peace,
PT
(my camp is down by Marquette/Gwinn)
RaisedRover91 01-28-2005, 10:19 AM Nice to see people with rovers enjoying the u.p. :smokin:
As for my vibration problems, the tires and wheels are clean and free of snow or ice. To make sure it wasnt a tire problem i had them balanced they were way off (2oz) on one tire but..... it didnt stop the vibes. I went for a copper country drive and noticed that the vibes stop when the truck is put in neutral while at speed. I am at a loss here everything appears tight. I also read all other posts that related to my problem and still couldnt find anything after much inspection. My guess is the pinion bearing in the front diff is shot is this possible? Where else should I start looking?

PTSchram 01-30-2005, 08:43 AM Start pulling driveshafts and see if one or the other causes the vibes to go away. Let's rule out the easy, cheap stuff first before we convist something more complex, expensive and a real bitch to remove/replace.
We might be up that way mid-February. How's da weather, eh? (my dad's from Gladstone, I can speak this way!)
RaisedRover91 01-30-2005, 05:04 PM Ahh, da weahter can be summed up with 2 word LOTS OF SNOW AND COLD. There was more than 5 ft of snow on the ground further north on the keweenaw last weekend. Gunna get a bit warmer next week or so => A chance to work outside without looseing my hands.
I will pull the front drive shaft and run it around. The vibes just quit and left a grinding noise from the front end. It is really noticeable when you let of the gas at higher speeds. Is there anything else worth checking during this warm spell

Keep the yooper accent moving
Pedro 01-30-2005, 05:12 PM May be your props seals are gone,do you grease them regular?
Cherub Rock 01-30-2005, 11:48 PM You may have answered my question in your first post, but just for my own edification, when you say u-joints, do you mean a u-joint, or a rotoflex?
I had a similar problem when I first got my Disco, and despite being a relatively capable DIY, I couldn't pin the problem down.
Not trying to underestimate you, but in my case my rotoflex couplink was just all torn up, and I overlooked it... switched over to a ujoint and all was fine.
RaisedRover91 01-31-2005, 03:47 PM Forgive my ignorance but…..
Dont Think I have a rotoflex. Unless I am wrong they come on later discos and rangies. I am pretty sure that I have a diff or transfer case problem. The grinding must be comming from a bad bearing or binding gear teath. Unless there is a way to check the status of diff bearings/gears or transfer case components with them in the car its time to get wrenching. Will post when
I find the problem.

-snow is great till your working in it
PTSchram 02-01-2005, 04:12 PM You're correct, you almost certainly do not have a roto-flex, however, every time I say that, I find one that doesn't fit.
Before we continue in our conviction of the transfer case, let's jack the vehicle up and turn the wheels to see if we might have a bad wheel bearing. Any drag or noise may indicate further investigation is warranted.
