: Tube type Michelin XCL 7.50 on tubeless Wolf rims. Tube or not?
tobbjo 01-28-2005, 01:24 AM Hello
I have Michelin XCL 7.50x16 Radials, marked "Tube Type".
Mounted on "Wolf" steel wheels 6.5x16J (Tubeless)
With tubes
When I air down to as high as 1 bar (14psi) and "get it", I spin the tyre and tube so much on the rim that the valve starts leaking. When I air down to 0,6bar (8psi) i shear the valve and loose the beads.
I'm thinking about running without tube to help with this.
What is the problem of running a radial tube type tyre without tube?
Other suggestions? rim screws? glue?
Yeah, I know I should just mount the damn Tirelocs and be done with it...

I think you answered your own question. In the long-run what would you be most happy with? Beadlocks!
tobbjo 01-28-2005, 10:10 AM It's more complicated than that. I have this set of Tirelocks, mounted on standards steel range rover wheels (rostyle). They are not what i want, the wolfs are muche better.
However the tirelock is very difficult to mount on the wolfs because there is not enough space for the sealing washers.
Put the sturdy tires on weak tirelocked wheels?
Move the tirelock to the wolfs - yes, in the long run, but time is not permitting right now.
Put a new tube in the wolf and hope it holds better without sand and gravel inside?
mount the tire on wolf without tube?
These are winter tires for my daily driver, so in april or so I will have time to fool around with the tirelocs.

H-vegasdisco 01-28-2005, 05:28 PM man i wish i could find those tires here in the u.s.
Pedro 01-28-2005, 06:37 PM we, are interested in what you find out (on our site)
wilsby 01-30-2005, 11:30 AM My tire place said to go by what the tire says, not the rim. I run mine on 7" wide Range II steelies with tubes. Granted, I don't really air these down, but they work fine.
Also on Wolf's (Wolves?) on the Defender. Go with tubes and don't air down too much until spring. :flipoff2:
tobbjo 01-30-2005, 12:57 PM I may have invented a CB torque limiter for the half shafts ;-)
When i removed rear half shafts to inspect for assumed twist after over ambitious 60km/h full throttle air rides on frozen sand (good traction) I found 10 spline half shafts in as new condition! Perhaps thanks to the tires turning on the rim?
this is on 1989 3.9 RRC

hahaha atleast theres one good point to it all then ! They should have been
toast !
If there spining on the rims with the tube they probly won,t seal great as a tubless , I run 285/85/16 MT117 silverstones on RR vouge 3 spoke alloys without tubes , ok down to around 4/6 on a previous rig on steels , but you could hear them lose air on occasion when pushed agianst logs ect .

Stupid frnch jackasS 01-31-2005, 02:35 AM I have some old school bias 7.50 with tubes on 5.5" split rims, and have had no problem airing down to 0.4 bar. I think your rim might be too wide for your tire size, just my $0.02. good luck.

6.5" wide rims is factory spec for these tires.
tobbjo 01-31-2005, 12:29 PM But they look bettr on 5.5" rims.

I think the spec is 5.5 to 6.5. I run them on 6.5 and 7.0. Both work great for what I do.
I'm getting good at four wheel skids with ample throttle while cornering. Trutracs aren't that bad. And I have yet to lose a stud.
