I have been digging around in the Calorado DMV. Have a few questions. What can you guys get away with as for a buggy being street legal? I always see all these trailer queens with Colorado plates on them. It's says being out of state and moving into Colorado that I need to register for a Colorado title and have a cop check out the vins? I was planning on building a tj buggy, but dunno if I will be able to title it now or not. A little confused on their laws.

To register in Colorado if you're coming in from out of state you'll need a VIN verification. The places that are certified with VIN verification check the VIN tag on your vehicle against the VIN number on the title that you have which is from another state. That's all there is to it. A title is required for registration, so get one in the state you're in now and it will be checked once you get to CO.

The guys you see with CO plates most likely have their buggies licensed as another vehicle with an already existing CO title. If there is a CO title already in hand no vehicle inspection/VIN verification is done. You provide the title and a passing emissions test (not required in all areas though) and you get license plates/registration.

When I first got my CJ in colorado, the guy I bought it from was certified to do the VIN inspection...He gave me a signed piece of paper and the out of state title. I went to the DMV with the title, signed vin inspection and proof of insurance and got it titled with no problem. I didn't have to have the cops inspect it (I did this with a different car, though). That was 4 years ago and there isn't much left on that jeep that's original...I guess you can say it's a trailer queen. It is still titled as a jeep even though it isn't street legal any more.

Some dealers can inspect it for you. The DMV can also inspect it for you. I don't think they care how legal it is as long as it has a VIN number.

The DMV won't do VIN verifications. Emissions testing stations, law enforcement, or licensed auto dealers are the three options.

It's amazing what ten seconds on Google will turn up: http://www.revenue.state.co.us/mv_dir/wrap.asp?incl=titlereg/about/index

how do you go about getting a vin # for a buggy built from scratch with no existing anything?
