Just wondering about what is involved in doing a spring over axle conversion on a 1975 CJ 5. If I can gain 2" by doing this, I can get 2" outta shackles and leave the stock springs. I plan on running 4" suspension lift w/ 3" body lift for a total of 7" with 37's/40s if they will fit. BTW Im new here.

.....BTW Im new here.

You don't say. Let me be the first to give ya a hearty Welcome. Why don't you find that little button called SEARCH and try typing in SOA and CJ.

well, actually, search for "SOA*" The asteriks will allow you to do that, since it won't search for anything under 4 characters.
I'll at least lead the horse to water.........we'll see what happens

BTW Im new here.

That's funny, I almost spit my coffee out my nose.
SOA will give you a little more than 2" lift, more like 5.5" depending on spring pack thickness and axle tube diameter.
As for now all you need is the obligatory shout "SEARCH!!!".
The subject is like "white on rice" here.
The trick is searching in "Jeep talk" under the keywords "spring+over" or "spring+over+axle".
That's all you're getting from me DAN. :flipoff2:

Ahh what you are in need of is whats called a "MASSEY LIFT" Very popular and great for 40" tires <trade secrets deleted>

<trade secrets deleted>

The "Massey Lift" <trade secrets deleted> will give you insane ground clearance because of the big tires <trade secrets deleted> and you will be able to fit through the narrower parts of the trail were even comp rigs can't hope to go. You will have the most bad ass CJ-5 in the country! Hell maybe even in the whole world! Make sure you take pictures I want to see this hell raising billy goat of a jeep!

Hilarious, thank you for explaining Massey Lift, I had always wondered what it was and sure as hell wasn't asking! Actually, I had pretty much figured it out, but not all of the details.
Someone should quote that in their sig, so they know better. :D

If you don't know how much lift you will gain you shouldn't do it. If you can't figure that out then the rest will be to complicated. Search the, what's it called, FAQ section, ya ya that's it. :flipoff2:

Trade secrets... damn forgot this was top secret shiznit... just wish I could of got one of the stickers :(

Ok on topic....

Like has been said SOA gives 5-6" of lift depending on axles/spring perch design.

However spring over + lift springs + BL + stock wheelbase/width of CJ-5 = death waiting to happen!

A spring over on fairly flat springs, no body lift, and a decent amount of fender trimming should keep you fairly low and stable. Personally I would want some wider axles and longer wheelbase. Since you are wanting to go big in tire size I'm guessing you are upgrading the axles as well, do you plan on stretching the wheelbase at all? A Cj-5 is real short and will want to flip over backwards with bag ass tires, also have fun getting a usable rear driveshaft.

Keep it low, long, and wide and you will have an all around better performing rig.

EDIT: Just wanted to add I seriously couldnt imagine getting a driveshaft to work on a stock wheelbase CJ-5 setup to clear those tires... Have helped build CJ's/YJ's with spring over and they at least needed a CV shaft to get rid of driveshaft vibration, the same amount of lift would be near maxing out the U-joints at ride height. SOA and usable shaft is possible but this makes stretching the wheel base even more apealing.

Im located in centreville. Im not building a serious trail rig. I have to drive over 300 miles to the nearest rocks, so this vehicle is built mainly for (gasp) mud. Mostly, however, this jeep wont leave the road 98% of the time. Yes it was stupid of me not to search this topic before I asked. Is that Flame-Worthy?
