: Make to fit steering shaft problems

I have an 86' BII that seems to never stop breaking things :mad3: anywho the latest is the old worn out rag joints in the steering shaft, a trip to the local " fuck you in the butt" salvage yard, scored a possible replacement shaft from an ealry 90's aerostar van, this shaft with some help from my trusty grinder has been made to work, however it is a tad longer then I need, so shorten I must. However the slip joint portion of the shaft has some built in retainer which prevents it from coming apart so that I could shorten the male and female ends to reduce the overall length. Does anyone know what allows the slip shaft to slide longer and shorter but prevents it from sliping into two pieces? I didn't want to go destroying the thing since it came from the aforementioned ass clowns. Thanks for anything you can provide.
