: narrowed and bobbed
SJscouter 01-31-2005, 08:41 PM this is a project that me and my boss have been talking about for a long time. Recently we had time to pull the truck into the shop and start tearing it apart. Our plans were to bob the truck about 15 inches and narrow it 10" in on both sides.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/seanbuildup001.jpg
After hackin off all that old sheetmetal we chopped the frame off as far as we could without moving the spring mounts and threw in a new crossmemberhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/seanbuildup002.jpg
then i cut and pinched the back door posts so that a quarter panel would sit strait and not have to warp around the doorpost when it was screwed onhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/seanbuildup006.jpg
we choped some new rear quarters up to test fit them to the truck and it lookes something like this.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/seanbuildup010.jpg
then i chopped the quarter down and welded the back lip back on so that it would fit on the truck and i trimmed the it to fit the tires.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup016.jpg
Me and Sean decided to build a 1x1 frame to give the quarter more strengh and to have somthing to attatch the inner to.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup029.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup032.jpg
then we used sheetmetal screws to hold the quarter and corner cap onto the 1x1 frame.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup033.jpg
ya i know the lense is on upside down.
tmbrtank 01-31-2005, 10:17 PM Puts my trimming to shame. Nice work :smokin:
KZ
SJscouter 01-31-2005, 10:23 PM haha ya seans rig was kinda hacked together cause everything was always being dont right befor a trip so we are taking the time and doing everything right.
Some other plans are:
-full custom cage
-narrow the front
-full hydro steer :D
ih4ever 01-31-2005, 10:38 PM i m very interested in doing somthing just like that to one of my scouts, just take the body completely off and start cutting the frame and put everything back the way i want it to be. it would be very helpful of you if you could send me some emails of pics and discriptions of what you did, and where you put your gas tank etc... and what you modified, to make this chore easier...
do you guys work for anything scout?? i recongnize sean and i saw you were from san jose. is that seans scout your working on?? i remember seeing those fender wells on the sierra trek. im the guy that had the scout at the top of the hill and met sean and a couple of the other scout owners with him.
thanks

tmbrtank 01-31-2005, 11:01 PM I had dreamed up what you are doing but ended up with this. I'll let you know soon enough if I still need to do that.
scoutrallye 01-31-2005, 11:04 PM Thanks for posting this Kev. I have been wanting to functionalize and slim down the Scout for a long time. The reason I didn't go truggy style was to keep the lines and look of the Scout. And I need to have space for my three kids (soon to be four) :D to sit. The cage is going to be internal/external to the body work. We'll see how it turns out. Hoping to have it done by Hollister Hills in March.
scoutrallye 01-31-2005, 11:06 PM Hey Chris,
I remember you from Fordyce as well. What's new with your Scout? Hopefully we can keep the pics coming.

Chief yelling alot 02-01-2005, 12:02 AM your tail ligts up-side down :flipoff2:
harleykeith 02-01-2005, 11:21 AM It will be right if he puts it on its top--when he wheels it
SJscouter 02-01-2005, 12:51 PM i m very interested in doing somthing just like that to one of my scouts, just take the body completely off and start cutting the frame and put everything back the way i want it to be. it would be very helpful of you if you could send me some emails of pics and discriptions of what you did, and where you put your gas tank etc... and what you modified, to make this chore easier...

hunter2good2000@yahoo.com
ya i could send you some pictures of the rest of the stuff we did...
ya i work at anything scout and sean is the owner, unfortunatly i wasnt on the sierra trec but sean(truck were building) and cary(the red 800)were.
SJscouter 02-01-2005, 12:58 PM hopefully ill get some picks of our gas tank mounts and design. its somthing ive never seen befor but i seems to be very stong and simple.
ill take some pics tonight.
ih4ever 02-01-2005, 01:07 PM hey sean hows it going? nothing to new, i just put a warn 9000i on a barrowed design from d and c, trying to a rear tire carrier and jerry can holder.
after you left and the day was done, i had to go back down the hill and i popped some pretty big holes in BOTH front tires, had to plug them up and gimp home on saturday. so i just had to go with bigger tires, i now have 35 mtr in stead of 33 baja claws. i hit a tree on the way out so i had to do some minor fender trimming. and i plan on contacting you sometime soon for that doubler trasfer case idea that i just loved. a friend told me also if i wanted to go even lower i could always put a low gear kit in the dana 20 for around 6:1!!
i would love to see some pics and details about the build, i might want to start an extreme build up one of these days.
email them to me at hunter2good2000@yahoo.com
chris beehner
troutbum 02-01-2005, 03:11 PM you'll love the lack of overhang
http://www.rachwilkins.com/scout/wheelin/ww/scout_fall1.jpg
scoutrallye 02-01-2005, 05:00 PM That looks sweet. I think you are right about the over hang, the last rubicon trip we were on I let one my employees drive for a while and he smashed the daylights out of my rear quarter and end cap. This should make that harder to do. Is that scout narrowed at all?
SJscouter 02-01-2005, 08:47 PM me and sean decided to use the stock tank rather than making a cell and probably putting it under the back seat. this way there is more cargo room after we chopped about 15 inches of it off. kinda different design tell me what you think.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup001.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup002.jpg
troutbum 02-01-2005, 09:14 PM Is that scout narrowed at all?
No, I am running full width 60's but stock width body, I am seriously thinking of dove tailing the rear this year though.
I think keeping the stock tank is good idea, I am running a fuel cell in the bed and it sure is a space hog,
ChiScouter 02-01-2005, 09:47 PM SC nice looking rig
Hey do you know anything about that Canaryinacoalmine.com guy? He seemed to vanish in the middle of his trip, but gave props to you guys for rig prep on his site
The Fleckster 02-01-2005, 10:48 PM Nice work, lets see some shots of the whole rig about 10 feet away :cool2:
Sully 02-01-2005, 11:10 PM haha ya seans rig was kinda hacked together cause everything was always being dont right befor a trip so we are taking the time and doing everything right.
Some other plans are:
-full custom cage
-narrow the front
-full hydro steer :D
Nice work!! I like it. Just for reference, to kind of get an idea, are you using full width axles or Scout axles on that rig?
scoutrallye 02-01-2005, 11:39 PM The guy's name from canaryinacoalmine is Dan, his Scout was hardcore for the long haul. He logged over 6000 miles and is back with the Scout. On my Scout, the axles are 61" wms to wms Dynatrac 60's with 15x12" MRW beadlocks with 2" back spacing. I think the over all width is about 78-80". I will work on a few more pics from a distance. Tomorrow we are going to start back on the right side. Next will be to finish up the back with a bumper etc.... and next all the cage work. I have been inspired by the tube Scouts on this board. (Looking good fella's.) I can't wait to get the cage done.
SJscouter 02-02-2005, 12:41 PM sorry about all the extreme close ups. The side of the truck that i was workin on was about 3 feet from the wall but today im gona pull it back over to the shop and work on it outside so ill take some pics of the whole truck. :D
Snoopy 02-02-2005, 05:29 PM Looks good SJ ~ My favorite part is the cut up quarters ~ brand new quarters at that ~ yeah baby   :grinpimp:
ih4ever 02-02-2005, 07:39 PM about that gas tank is there any chance of the rear axle hitting it???
and what axles are you runnin under neath it?
and if sean's out there, i heard at another forum that you have broken your t cases at hollister hills a while ago. could you let me know what broke and how you fixed it... i just got a big pay check and looking forward to installing and finding a divorced np 205 like you did.
thanks chris
ih4ever 02-02-2005, 07:44 PM i just noticed... where did you get that gas tank out of? that isnt a scout tank is it???
reuben 02-02-2005, 08:58 PM stock 19 gallon.
scoutrallye 02-02-2005, 09:10 PM The tank is close to the axle but I don't think it will hit. It is about 4-5" inches from the top of the diff. My bump stops are set at about 4" so I should be fine. About the T-case. THe way it works, the front output of the 205 goes into the rear of the 20/18 then out to the front axle. IT is an 18 front/ rear shaft. When I first got the case together I used shims stacked together to replace the space where the gear used to be. BAsically the shims tweaked and caused the star gear to separate from its input and bam! It exploded. I re-worked it with solid spacers welded the shaft together and it has held up really well. Sierra Trek, rubicon, and about 6 Hollister trips no breakage or noise. If I have any other problems I have a shaft almost ready that is going to be machined from a solid shaft. and upgrade it to 32 spline in and out. I love it though. And you are right I can put a bronco 2.47 or a Tera 3.15 in the 20 portion. I will get pics and show you guy's the set up. Super cheap way to get dual cases. And it's all IH parts.
SJscouter 02-02-2005, 09:38 PM the gas tank is a stock 19 gallon like reuben said, the reason it looks different is cause its backwards. that was the only way to use this design on catchin he lips of the tank.
SJscouter 02-03-2005, 11:13 PM last few days been side tracked with makin some bumpers but today i pulled the left quarter that was done and brough it down to the shop and started to make a mirror of it for the other side. ill post some pics tomorrow maybe...
SJscouter 02-06-2005, 04:26 PM here is a picture of the truck from the side. you can really see how much shorter it is.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup003.jpg
Cool :) , do you plan on adding some kinda bumper on the end or just leavin the new crossmember bare?
I will get pics and show you guy's the set up. Super cheap way to get dual cases. And it's all IH parts.
Really cool
Snoopy 02-06-2005, 06:12 PM :smokin:
SJscouter 02-07-2005, 12:58 PM at first sean wanted to just leave the cross member bare and mold it into the floor but i think we might try and make a mini bumper that will protect the back of the truck alittle better than the crossmember would.
Snoopy 02-07-2005, 01:56 PM What seats are those?
ih4ever 02-07-2005, 02:41 PM just wondering what is your wheel base on that thing??
JustinL 02-07-2005, 02:46 PM have pictures of anyone who has done this to an model 80?
JoshC 02-07-2005, 04:49 PM at first sean wanted to just leave the cross member bare and mold it into the floor but i think we might try and make a mini bumper that will protect the back of the truck alittle better than the crossmember would.
Nice to have met you out there today. I didn't realize though that the pic above was of the good side. :flipoff2: You guys better get crackin!
scoutrallye 02-07-2005, 06:51 PM Thanks for the encouragment josh, It was good to see you to. we got the other side done today. Still to go before HH - 1) At least rear portion of cage, 2) Full Hydro steer 3) ditch the power lok in the rear for a spool. Anyone need a 35 spline Dana 60 power lok? Cheap! 4)finish rear bumper and floor- Get crackin is an understatement. But it'll be done and ready for tank trap.
DJForrestA 02-07-2005, 07:49 PM I'm interested in that powerlock. What gear ratio and will it work in a front axle?
SJscouter 02-07-2005, 08:17 PM Snoop- There APC racing seats i think they have them in jegs there cheap and very functional i think like $150 or somthing
IH4ever- read the whole post.
justinL- sorry man not that i know of, guys have bobed them befor(i think) but iv never seen a narrowed 80???
Josh- ya man it was cool meetin you too and your totaly right that is the good side of the truck i got the other side quarter panel done today and hopfully ill get the 1x1 frame done tomorrow but i never know what sean will have me doing. Maybe even start the cage by the end of the week.
DJForrestA- The powerlock is 4.56.
here is what i got done today.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup.jpg
DJForrestA 02-07-2005, 11:04 PM I'll take it PM with details. I need a carrier for my front axle. It has 4.10's now but I'll be running 4.88's. I think that carrier is the cutoff for a Dana 60 so it should be great. Please let me know asap so we can get this done. Does anyone know if it will work in a front axle.
The Fleckster 02-08-2005, 02:48 PM Okay Okay  I gotta ask..........
How in the world do you find time to work on your own junk??????
In the last week i have had spring feaver up here and now have 4 Scout Stage 1-2 lifts to do, a F150 9" skyjacker, a Jeep Cherrokee t-case rebuild job, and on top of that about 20 orders to fill. Its more than the 3 of us can handle. Sean send me your secrete and I will pay, I will pay Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeee
SJscouter 02-08-2005, 11:15 PM Okay Okay  I gotta ask..........

The thing is....
sean is bussy doing the same thing you do working on other trucks filling orders And that is exacly why he is having me do almost all of the work. he just tells me what he wants it to look like or what he wants were and i try my best to do it. Its not that he not able sean is an amazing fabricator but hes got the same problem as everyone else not enough time.
So i would have to suggest hire a kid who can weld who has the time to do the things you wish you had the time for. just as sean has done with me...
SJscouter 02-08-2005, 11:19 PM today i got some more done...
i pulled the truck over from the yard and mocked up the right side quarter and finished the 1x1 frame. I painted em so they dont rust anymore that they already have
my dumb camera ran out of batteries so ill get some pics up tomorrow of the
back... almost done. with 1 of 4
The Fleckster 02-09-2005, 09:02 AM Yea tried that. Have a WABO certified welder and a counter man going full time and if i hire another guy then i gotta stop buying all the tools that make the shop better and bigger. Everything is paid for cash, no credit so i do not own anyone anything. That way if i break a leg, want a vacation, or hell get fed up with the Cheapest creatures on Earth second to women and quit, then i am free and clear with all my chit :D
Cant wait to see some pics, also cant wait to get back on Project X.
1962 Scout narrowed 5-8" from middel, and bobed 10" from rear with Unimog axles (or two steering Rockwells) :grinpimp: .
Post up more pics :cool2:
SJscouter 02-09-2005, 08:15 PM i got some new pics today of the back of the truck tomorrow im gona line the inside of the quarters...

scoutrallye 02-09-2005, 09:46 PM I know the struggle John. For me, I just have to make it happen. Whether I do work on it (rare) or if I have to take Kevin or one of my other employees off a paying job. Hurts but I enjoy wheeling and getting out with customers and friends. If I can't do that I think I would quit all together. It stinks to build rigs for customers and not have one for yourself. I just got a sweet 79 rallye running for my daily driver. I'll get a pic tomorrow. Now I have a few beaters, my wheeler and a nice driver. I think I am set for a while.
slipscomb 02-10-2005, 11:34 AM Looks good. Alot like mine when I first did it but I've smashed it all to hell since then. Here's a pic in Mounteagle, Tenn. a few years ago:

SJscouter 02-10-2005, 09:23 PM that looks really cool... :D
but whats with the wheel on the right. did you scan negative bacwards or am i actually seeing that.
The Fleckster 02-11-2005, 01:50 PM I believe its the Same Postal Scout featured in Ther Binder Bulletin Calander back when they used to do that cool make your own calander deal. Am i right? Do i winn whats behind door # 1 :D :cool2:
slipscomb 02-12-2005, 04:03 PM Yeah, it's right-hand-drive. Factory setup. Had it now for about 15 years of abuse. Didnt know it might have been in the Binder Calander. I did send in a pic but never saw a calander. Anyone have a pic they can scan? I would like to see if it was or just see another RHD.
Sean
SJscouter 02-13-2005, 01:37 PM this is a good one to show how short it really is.

I am loving it...
This thread is soooooo getting printed right now.... :smokin:
I would like to see or read more about the Duals that you mentioned...I am very interested in seeing how it looks/works, with some photos..
ih4ever 02-19-2005, 01:17 PM a dana 20 and dana 18 have the same case but the 18 rear output goes off of the passenger side. sean took a dana 20 transfer case and took a 18 rear output and front out put and stuck in into the 20 and used the shaft as a bearing. he then took a divorced np 205 and hook the rear out put of the 20 too the 205 and then took the front out put and connected that to the dana 18 rear out put. and then connected the rear out put of the 205 to the rear drive line...
i was thinking about doing it as well but i dont know about the length issues on the 100" wheel base...
i was also thinking about cutting my dana 20 in half and putting the np 205 shaft right under neath it to the front axle.
NotQuiteSane 02-19-2005, 05:36 PM Nice. I've been trying to talk myself into bobbing my SII also, but I don't think i'll narrow it.
now a 80/800, I do think would be cool bobbed & narrowed. did this (photochop, not the actual work) up some months back:

NQS
ih4ever 02-22-2005, 06:17 PM so anything new with the bobbed scout???
JoshC 02-22-2005, 08:37 PM I stopped by today. Sean's got a bunch of customer jobs he's working on and he's got his priorities straight.
He's got a lot of work to do but he's going to pull a couple of all nighters to make it happen for Hollister.
scoutrallye 02-23-2005, 02:31 PM sorry for nothing new on the Scout. Josh is right. Customers truck come first. But I will be back next week. Hydro steer and start the cage. I am scrapping the spool. Too much to do before Hollister. Can't wait to get out there.
SJscouter 02-24-2005, 04:27 PM whew...
just got back from a little vacation and am startin back on the truck tomorrow im also tryin to get somewhat of an exo made on my truck befor march comes along. me and sean are gona work some late nights this week to getr'done.
SJscouter 02-27-2005, 05:17 PM here is what ive got on my truck right now its more of an extencive front bumper than an exo cage, im gonna try and get some more rear quarter armor done befor this weekend
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup018.jpg
SJscouter 02-28-2005, 11:46 PM Today i finaly got some stuff done on seans truck...
today i got the other inner fender, the hard part of making the back bumper
and i boxed in the rocker sliders kinda hard to explain take a look. we did this so that the cage can be mounted as far out as possible to prevent as much body damage on these new quarters. also thinking about making a mimi exo on this truck too.
Somthing else nice about not welding on the quarters...
when tank trap comes around we can just unscrew them so they dont get thrashed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup019.jpg
Sully 03-01-2005, 11:53 AM I've generally thought that most of the bob-jobs I've seen, while practical, have looked like shit. But I dig that rig more every time I see a picture of it. Way cool job. :cool2:
SJscouter 03-01-2005, 10:29 PM thanks sully, Me and Sean are trying hard to make this look good and not hacked together
today i got going on the back bumper and got it welded on, i also welded some plates under the floor to mount the back of the cage to, the bumpers not totaly done but it almost there
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/buildup022.jpg
Sean started the hydro steer and got the pump mounted and the drag link and tirod removed.

Dude, is that a cooler hanging below the rocker? That's just there temporarily...right?
Also, that looks like alot of work on the rockers, why didn't you just go with boat rockers?
Cool thread, glad to see the pics keep on rolling in.
scoutrallye 03-02-2005, 12:11 AM It actually is a PS cooler that wasn't there temporarily. It has been there for a year over the Fordyce, Con, etc.. never hit it. However, with the new full hydro steer a trick cooler is getting mounted under the hood. So I will never know if I ever would have hit it. I see your point though. The rockers evolved from the originals being rusted beyond belief and wanting to save as much ground clearance as possible while keeping a semi - stock look. They are also functional with a 4" lip on the inside. I don't run doors so this keeps the crap in the truck and not falling on the ground. Time is short until HH! we are leaving on Friday morning and have a lot to do.
SJscouter 03-06-2005, 06:26 PM this weekend we all went down to hollister and had a great time. me and sean played search and rescue for a good part of the day but it was still fun. the right rear quarter on seans truck will have to be redone. it was thoughly smashed against the hillside on a trial. the cage was killer tho ill get some pics of all the damage and the back half of the cage tomorrow.
SJscouter 04-27-2005, 01:04 PM boy did this post need an update, well tulare was a couple of weeks ago and i just thought id put some pics of seans truck on here and how he did in the pile....
we set up the welder to do some demo's for people
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/tulare2005007.jpg
the pile was ok enough to have fun on

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/norcalmoto/tulare2005049.jpg
everything on seans truck worked great. sean let me take his truck over the pile and the steering is amazing. gets alittle tought when its hot but we have a cooler that just needs to be installed.
i think that the pile made the event alot more fun.
Bindernut 04-27-2005, 06:11 PM a dana 20 and dana 18 have the same case but the 18 rear output goes off of the passenger side. sean took a dana 20 transfer case and took a 18 rear output and front out put and stuck in into the 20 and used the shaft as a bearing. he then took a divorced np 205 and hook the rear out put of the 20 too the 205 and then took the front out put and connected that to the dana 18 rear out put. and then connected the rear out put of the 205 to the rear drive line...

i was also thinking about cutting my dana 20 in half and putting the np 205 shaft right under neath it to the front axle.
Um.......what? I'm sorry, I can't understand what was done here. Some kind of doubler setup, D20-->NP205, but what's the D18 parts for again?

tsm1mt 04-28-2005, 11:43 AM Um.......what? I'm sorry, I can't understand what was done here. Some kind of doubler setup, D20-->NP205, but what's the D18 parts for again?
He built more or less a carrier bearing out of the "front output" chunk of the Dana 20, but taking a Dana 18 rear output shaft and coupling to the Dana 20 front output shaft, removing some of the intermediate gear pickup points (or some gears on the output shafts) so that it's JUST a through-shaft riding on some bearings.
So you run the front output of the NP205 into the rear (offset) "output"/input of the Dana 20, which transfers power out the "stock" front output of the Dana 20.
Lets you keep the stock(ish) front driveshaft, no need to cut the Dana 20 apart to clear the driveshaft for the second 'case, etc.
SJscouter 04-28-2005, 11:32 PM reuben when you come down to the shop to pick up some fireworks and whatever else you were gona come get. ill print up a 8x10 of that pic if you want???

Joe V 01-09-2006, 01:54 PM How about a thread update with more pics? Tailgate, taillights, gas filler neck, interior welds... When I ran clawhammer on Saturday, I was thinking; should I Reubenize this boat or bob it? Reubenize or bob?
 Maybe for 2006 I'll Reubenize and bob with outer skins???
Anyway, an update would be sweet.
SJscouter 01-09-2006, 07:06 PM ill snap some pics of it tomorrow at work.:smokin:
