What are you Duramax owners getting for milege, loaded and empty? With a 6spd or an auto.My dad gets averages 19-22 empty and 13-17 loaded with an auto, depending on the size of load.I have a neighbor only getting 12 empty.??????? Do you have a chip or not.If so what kind of mpg gains?

04.5 lly auto on 35s my best was 17 with the chip on 60 hp
on 35s my worst was 12 towing about 10k lbs hilly michigan terrain (rollers) chip on 60 and a lead foot

stock tires best 18.5 with a different chip on 60hp
stock tires worst was 14.5 with same different chip on 100 doing launches and driving like an ass

100% stock with non winterized fuel and casual driving 18.1 mpg

all of my mileages are in mixed driving, on stock tires ive only run winter blend fuel with the chip and it has 21k miles

The best mileage I got in my dad's '02 dmax, Allison trans crew cab 3/4 ton short bed is 12.5. That was very flat terrain, 65 mph tops, towing my TJ on a utility trailer. Tires and truck are still bone stock.

He has chipped it since then but I haven't used it sine then because I have my own rig now.

I got 21-22 MPG solo by keeping my 2WD, 6-speed 2500HD Crew Cab, Short Bed D-max down to 70-75 MPH on the stock tires, which I kept 50 psi in (all 4) when I had no load. 75 MPH = 21 MPG, 80 MPH = 19 MPG for me. No modifications.

Pulling a 5th wheel I ran about 68 MPH and got 12-14 MPG depending on wind. Pulling a loaded open 1-car hauler at 70 MPH = 15 MPG.

I don't understand the varyation.I'm told some guys are getting 25-26.Dad's got about 17mpg empty when it was new.I think after 25k is when he started seeing better #'s.It is stock except for a K&N kit which didn't change anything.I'd like to understand, but don't yet.

I don't have a duramax, but from reading, owning a PSD and knowing people who have have owned cummins and duramax's, I would say anyone telling you that they are getting 25-26 mpg, must be rolling down hill at 50mph tops. High teens empty seems to be the average for most of the diesels and low teens while towing moderate loads. That's just what I've noticed.

I have a 2004 LB7 Allison combo. Any time I have a trailer hooked to the truck, I get 14 mpg, weight and hills don't seem to matter. This is towing somewhere between 65-70mph. Now empty, local combo of city/hyway, I get 17mpg. On the freeway, if I keep it under 60, I will get 19-23mpg, and 19-20 in the 60-70 range.

My Father with a 2002 w/ Alison seems to get better while towing, and on the local stuff, by 1-2mpg.

By brother with a 2004 LLY w/ Alison was around 14mpg city driving, more stop and go than my local driving. Empty on the freeway, he claimed that he was getting 14 or less, I assume doing 80mph. He never towed anything, so no info on that.

What I have noticed, and try to pratice, is to advoid any stop and go driving. Keep the speeds 65 and under, and use the cruse control.

Anyone saying they are getting 25 mpg with a CTD is lying. I just got done with a trip, and running between 80 and 90 on the way down I got 11.5. (TOWING) On the way back I slowed down to 65-70 and got 14.5. That's good mileage towing, I don't care what you drive.

The guys that say CTDs get 25 mpg towing their shit are lying. Either that or they have 500 lb rigs on tiny trailers.

I don't understand the varyation.I'm told some guys are getting 25-26.

Pay attention, I am getting tired of saying this :p

PEOPLE ARE LIARS.

A few are just flat out lying on purpose, most are just pulling numbers out of the air. Most people do NOT keep an accurate mileage log. Most people actually think the onboard computer thing is "accurate"

I don't see anywhere it says anything about 25 mpg towing with a CTD.My friend tried to tell me he got 29 mpg with his 01' H.O. CTD,I said bull. The CTD dealer said 30 wasn't uncommon.I think they're crazy.25mpg is within reach, but 29-30 is unrealistic.{locrwln} you are used to furd which is lucky to get 17mpg ever.I only know 2 guys that ever claimed to get 20mpg with a PSD,I believe the one.Diesels aren't worth the cost if you can only get 14-15 empty.I was getting that with a vortec 454.One local dealer had a custumer getting 16-18 with a 496 6spd.{Toy} I didn't think you could get an 04 lb7 without a 6spd.???

Some people are so caught up in justifying their expense that they will lie.

When I post I'll give you accurate numbers. I don't care if anyone agrees or disagrees with my purchase. I bought what fit my needs. PERIOD. Am I happy with it? Yes. Have I driven and towed with other modern competitors? Yes and I have pictures. So what. They all have their merits. I bought what I wanted. Truth is you aren't going to get a CRAP truck nowdays. Even the Duramax injector problem, if you get it is covered for what, 100,000 miles? As long as they take care of you, so what?

I've towed a ton with lots of trucks. I bought what I wanted. When it comes down to it, if the price is what you want to pay go for it. Quitcherbitchin about what everyone else drives.

To make this fit into the topic again, I will repost that I get 12.5 towing with dad's Duramax and Allison 3/4 ton.

If you want to see it towing (way before I chopped and modified the hell out of my Jeep) click this:
http://www.cowtownjeeps.com/pics/chevytow.jpg

Every time I look at that picture I laugh how far my Jeep, trailer, truck have come. I guess everyone has to start somewhere.

Ive got a 2005 Crew Cab short bed 2500HD 4 wheel drive Duramax/ Allison and I have been getting 15 - 17 MPG. That is hand calculated. The computer seams to be consistantly 1 mpg low. I was a little suprised at the low numbers but I guess there are alot of people out there inflateing their MPG. I have ~3500 miles on the truck as of now and havent towed anything yet (but I cant wait!!!). I drive in a lot of traffic at times and I usually drive ~70 mph when traffic allows, so I might be able to squeeze another 1 or 2 mpg out of it by slowing down and staying out of traffic. I will say screw the mileage, I love the truck and the power of the duramax.

I think 15 to 17 is realistic empty. City I get about 18 empty and about 20 on the highway. If you look above though there were people saying 25 towing.

Can't you read TJ no where does it say 25mpg towing. The best towing mpg I see here is 17mpg and I stated that.He is a very carefull driver, easy on the right peddle. They are all hand calculated over the 85,000 miles.17 mpg is the best, was with a 20' flatbed with 4 atv's on it.13 mpg is pulling a 24' cattle trailer weighing close to 20,000lbs.22 is empty going 55-60 and 19 empty is going 75 on the interstate.I want to make it clear that I don't fudge #'s!If I drive it I don't get that kind of #'s.

.{Toy} I didn't think you could get an 04 lb7 without a 6spd.???

The 6 speeds are hard to come by here in Cali. They never stopped producing the allison.

All of my milage numbers are hand calulated. They have all averaged around 1 mpg better than the DIC estimate.

There are 04 (LB7) and 04.5 (LLY) Duramax engines just like there are 04 (305/555) and 04.5 (325/600) Cummins engines. Both D-max engines were available with both trannys, but the take rate for 6 speeds is less than 5%.

My truck was a 2002, so it doesn't have a DIC to compute the MPG. Every tank was logged and entered into an exel spreadsheet. Lifetime MPG was 38,014 miles to the last fillup and 1794.67 gallons for 21.18 MPG average. (Again this is a 2WD, 6-speed truck, stock and driven conservatively.) The total cost for fuel was $2,614.73, or $ 0.0688 per mile. Highest fuel price paid was $1.999 on 5/23/04. Lowest was $1.019 on 2/25/02, the first fuel I put in the truck. I traded it away on 9/28/04.

Believe it or don't. No skin off me.

I have similar records for my '96 GMC C1500 (20.22 MPG to date) and 2004 Suburban C1500 (16.86 MPG to date).

What's that 5500 4x4 like {mountain bronco}? I saw my first one the other day and was sold on it but kinda $$$ aren't they. How big of tires can you fit on it?

04 Crewcab 3500 freeway the best was 19-20. (but I was working for it)

Normal driving 17-18 (freeway)

towing around 14-15 (Samurai)

speeds around 75MPH
These are from my little computer thing in the dash, but I do it the normal way to check and it is sometimes off by 1 mpg so I figure it's pretty accurate.

At least some of you still drive 6spd's.I have been looking for one and they are kinda hard to find.Next ???,What are they worth in your part of the country for a 01-03 4x4 ex-cab 30,000-80,000 miles and clean?

I have a 2004.5 LLY Duramax with the allison. Have the edge with attitude and drive on #1 all the time. Best I got was 20 (but that was with the stock 245's on the freeway to L.A.) Worse I got was 10 towing my dump trailer full of wood about 10000 pounds worth. Get about 15 empty city/freeway combo (with my 305's), because I have a lead foot and like to get in front of people when they piss me off and put it on level 5 and smoke thier ass.

Paid $31,800 for my 04.5 LLY Duramax 3500 C&C. The flatbed was another 2 grand...4WD, reg cab, ZF 6 sp manual. There were two different incentive plans going on at that time, which saved my $3000 off of the top, the rest was dealer motivated. As for mileage... interstate driving unloaded at average of 70mph = 19.2 mpg. Combined driving unloaded= 18.1 mpg. Combined towing (24' flatbed gooseneck, Jeep, stuff)= 13.6 mpg.
