: Extrenal shock mounts
deznutz 02-01-2005, 03:41 PM recently picked up a used 3 link and was thinking about better shock locations for the front and possibly the rear. Working on a 95 Discovery with 3 inch RTE springs and 10 inch foxs front and back. I have recently seen some interesting set ups for the rear that angle the socks in towards the center link and may try to fab up my own on that end but was curious what any one has done in the front to get the shocks outside the springs and possibly retainers for the front springs. open to any ideas but have not found anything very descriptive in my searches yet. Thanks Dan

spot welds. why not?
>> front to get the shocks outside the springs
search again.
search for the one's that doug m made. if you'd rather mod than fab, could always use stock mounts from a 93-95 rangie equipped with EAS

i found 3 or 4 good threads with pics searching on external shock mount
deznutz 02-01-2005, 08:33 PM This picture helps more than anything I had come up with yet maybe I was looking at the wrong post. I don't know. the upper mounts look as though they are leaned into the engine bay a little is this for clearance issues or to help with travel by angling the shocks inward. Just starting to play around with the no stock ar strictly bolt on options. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
64rovr 02-01-2005, 09:08 PM SafariGard sells mounts that look extremely similar to the ones shown in the above pic. I just helped a friend install some on his 90 and they are nice, but they don't come without their fair share of fitment problems and SafariGard tweaking goodness.
I don't know what they list for though.

Agreed on that. You'd be better off getting something from either Rockware or Rover Tracks or Never Summer Offroad. Otherwise, fab them up.

and thanks for the useless comment. I'm surprised you didn't throw MJLee in there, too!

Yeah, I have the same orange and white jackstands too.
:flipoff2:
deznutz 02-03-2005, 01:46 AM I was really looking for more advice on what angles and mounts points that are easiest to use. If I just wanted a bolt on option I could have gone and bought something. I am a little new to custom angles and what exactly works and didn't want to try fifteen different set ups it someone had a general idea of where to start. Mostly curious if i need to angle shocks to the inboard side and what effect front to back angle has on rates and travel. If you all know of any sites or else where on this board with such info it would be appreciated. pretty much just looking for a little direction before I started merely trying different set ups.
roverhybrids 02-03-2005, 02:36 AM the shocks won't clear the engine/accesseries mounted like in the picture above. the space for the front shocks is very limited so just put them where they fit best:flipoff2:
A hoop design for the front mount allows you to get the shock closer to the frame; but requires a larger hole in the inner fender.
A retangular tube basically straight up from between the four steering box bolts is easier to fabricate but pushes the shock out further and the tire will rub it.
Buckon37s 02-03-2005, 08:42 AM If your going to all that work, why not:
MilSpec 02-03-2005, 02:37 PM Ok, looking at the pic above with the coilovers, I can obviously see the radius arm on top of the axle. Whats the deal with that?
Grimace 02-03-2005, 06:42 PM and no bump stops
Buckon37s 02-03-2005, 07:29 PM Why would I need bumpstops?? Don't have them in the rear either. The arms are on top only for clearance. I like it better with the new outers though :D
MilSpec 02-03-2005, 07:45 PM Bumpstops with coilovers? :shaking:
Nice steering geometry too. How does the rig track with the radius arms on top. Any difference. I'm down your way, I'd like to stop by and take a look.
Buckon37s 02-03-2005, 07:56 PM What kind of beer do you like? I'll have some waiting for ya! :) I love the way the truck drives. It's no car, but for what it is, it does well. I can still take corners at over the recommended speed. Not all that much over! The cool thing on the front is the modified radius arm that KC built. It lets the front soak up the full 14" on the coils. Here's an old pic. OK, sorry for stealing the thread.
edit: What are "Extrenal" shock mounts anyway. Don't we have an Extrenal gland??
You gonna bring that thing to any good events this year? i.e Cruces or the Rubicon? Maybe even the National Rally?
Looks good.
Buckon37s 02-03-2005, 10:25 PM thanks. I will be at CC this year. Hope to see you there.

Sweet! I'll be there on 37's as well. Although not quite as sophisticated as you. Hopefully my junk will be working good by then.
