: Caliper rebuilding?
PTSchram 02-01-2005, 04:26 PM OK guys, Shopgrrl's Rangie is running and running fine. Now, I realize that it needs new brakes. Front calipers and rotors are on the way (BTW-I have a killer price on front rotors for Rangies), but I was thinking about trying to rebuild the rears as I have plenty of cores from which to choose.
Anybody got any experience that doesn't include talent bar dancers or Girl Scouts? I've heard that sealing the two halves can be difficult and this has frightened me away from trying in the past.
(I bought rebuilds for the front as the calipers cost about the same as new pistons)
Peace,
PT

I just whent through this process last week-end, Seemed easy, unless I missed something.
-unbloted the 2 halves (Bolt seems to have red locktite on them, Would be a good idea to put some back),
-changed piston seals (Be carfull not to bend the metal ring when reinstalling)
-reused old pistons (Did not order new ones, should have .......)
- Bolt back together, reinstall
There is a rubber seal in between the two halves, not a full seal, more like an "O" ring, I have been able to reuse the original ones.
Guess next time I should take pictures :)
Old Scout 02-01-2005, 05:29 PM I don't know if RRs are the same but on a disco a single front seal will do both rears!
evilfij 02-01-2005, 07:00 PM Buy remans w/ lifetime warranty or spring for the stainless pistons and never have to do it again.
IIRC trade price was something like $40 a pop.
rtiqulatendisco 02-01-2005, 07:11 PM Any one use larger calipers with different rotors? I hear that EBC and DBA are "better" but I can't understand that braking power is increased without upgrading the caliper and pads.
Serious One 02-01-2005, 07:57 PM pish-posh! I've rebuilt at least 8 calipers, and trust me, if I can do it and not have any leaks or braking problems, you can PT.
IF re-man calipers are REALLY only $40, then go for it. If not, then rebuild 'em.
BTW, I didn't use new pistons, mine weren't that bad (none of 'em).

Ron-Where are these available at that price? I've had the occasional prob with the cheap chrome flashing coming off on the Lockheed replacement pistons. But I always replaced them since it's only about $8 per piston. Also, do they have the bore's resleeved with stainless as well?

Good news on the running vehicle for Shopgirl. If it is your own stuff just rebuild it. You can monitor the results.

tobbjo 02-02-2005, 12:21 AM Please forgive me if I'm completely missing something here, but why disassemble the caliper if your'e only changing pistons and seals. Cen be made with the caliper intact and hanging from the brake lines.
Only bitch might be to get badly stuck pistons out and to get the final steel ring in. Jave done without for 20000km without problem. As pendy said on you own fleet just do it and see how it goes.

evilfij 02-02-2005, 12:48 AM There are two seperate statements.
1. Remans are available at shop cost (ie not retail) from advanced at $40 plus core. They have a lifetime warranty.
2. Stainless pistons are available from a couple places in the UK. Zeus etc. I cannot see a need for inside being stainless as it does not get exposed like a piston does as the pad wears.
PTSchram 02-02-2005, 02:36 AM To get trade pricing, one must have open account status. I have too many open accounts as it is.
Autozone on-line cost is $37, but in spite of my excessive educational level, I cannot get the on-line ordering to not try to order all four calipers. If I buy them on-line, can I return the cores to my local store? There are so many things I'd rather do than deal with Autozone-I'll pay Rovers North prices rather than use Auotozone-I hate Autozone so much, I'd almost rather use XKs :flipoff2:
stainle$$ pistons-you guys know me better than this :flipoff2: I'm trying to figure out what it will take to earn CB of the year for 2005 to go with my wins for both 2003 and 2004 :flipoff2:
I'm off to find the cheapest (er, least expensive) rebuild kits
Peace,

You're just ignorant to the actual risks...
RoverChic 02-03-2005, 12:43 AM I second Remans.
Cough. Cough. Ron I sent u that link :p
evilfij 02-03-2005, 02:45 AM Hi Roverchic,
Actually, yes you did send me the link (thanks :flipoff2: ) but the autozone reman thing has been around for a few years, just up until recently they never had any instock, (see extensive dweb whining), but as I mentioned advanced not autozone . . . advanced is cheaper.

PTSchram 02-03-2005, 04:46 AM I got the rebuild kits on their way-real cheap. Everything but the seal between the halves. Anybody got a source for these before I send Shopboy out to see if they are available locally? He gets to go as he was the one who opened up an otherwise good used caliper :shaking:  :D
And Ron, get it right, it's not o.g. CB, it's OCB!
