I am considering a long range fuel tank and 5 speed tranny for my 87 fj60 to make it more useable for traveling and vacations.
my question is about the new 5 speed tranny that is available for +- $1900, is it worth the investment or would my money be better spent on other mods???
i have had the H55F for a while now and it is really nice to have on the freeway and the granny low is really nice to have in traffic. if you drive your rig a lot (like i use to) it is a great asset. However if you only drive your rig to the trail i would skip it.
If you are interested i might have one for sale this summer. complete with crossmember and bell housing (to 350) and anyother parts that go with it.

let me know when your ready TRD, It is a daily driver and I plan to keep it with the 2F intact, I just hoped to make it a better trip vehicle for the family.
you would cut a fellow cruiser head a deal wouldn't you ;)
i was going to ask 2 grand (that is how much i paid for it) and i am throwing in the cross member and anything else i can't use on the 465 (clutch?)
one more thing you should know is that it does not shit very smoothly at all. The way they made it was too a 4 speed and added a plate to the back with the 5th gear in it. The tranny is get stiff if it hasn't been driven for a while and loosens up once it heats up.

is the stiffness common for the H55F? my 4 speed is fairly stiff now. I did some reading on IH8MUD.com and found out about the crossmember difference.
what you upgrading to???

The H55 would be really nice for on-road driving. You'd be better off with something else if you do any real crawling, unless you get a doubler for it. I am selling an H55+t-case if you are interested. Hope I'm not stepping on any toes, TRD.:D

my rig was my daily driver when i bought it and i took it on some long (5 hour) road trips and the OD was nice but i don't need it anymore so i think i am going to go with a 465/203/205 doubler route and i want a centered rear diff to save money on D60's and run full width
FeCamel, no worries. how much is the doubler for the H55F anyways

I don't really recall the exact price of the doubler. I think they basically give you an NP203 to H55/H42 adapter, and an NP203 to split case adpater, and you get your own NP203 from the yard. I think they want around $1k for the adapters, I could be mistaken though. I have asked a few times, but none of the vendors ever responded to my e-mails. It gets you nice and low when needed, and you still have 5 streetable gears. It's expensive, but a nice option.

so you could theoretically run the H55F/203/205 if you wanted to spend 1800 in adapters? interesting (i wish i had money)

Yep, just buy the H55-NP203 adapter and the NP203-NP205 adapter. I wish I had $1800 too :p

The h55f shouldn't shift rough. Mine shifts just as nicely has a h42 4spd. The NP203 adpaters are $1048. This is to go between a h42/h55f and then the 203GRB and the split case. You need to provide your own 203GRB but they are cheap $150 is about tops around here.
