: Using 4.10 gears out of a Rubicon

I am putting a Dana 44 (standard rotation) out of a Scout in my '82 CJ-7 and was wondering if it is possible to use a set of 4.10 gears out of a Rubicon? I have read that they are a "thick" 4.10 and that they could be used with a high ratio carrier (3.73 and down numerically) if you drilled the bolt holes in the carrier bigger. Has anybody done this?

sounds feasable....i assume the pinion bearing placment and all is the same?

we talked about it but then figured it was mostly a pointless question since it's damn near impossible to get MOST Rubicon drivers to actually wheel them, much less to change the gearing in them in order to leave the 4.10 gears for the rest of us.

I thought TJ's had a slightly different pinion setup?

I've got a set and a redrilled carrier & bolts up on Ebay right now. Was going to put an EZ-Locker in with it but decided a limited-slip was a better fit for my DD. Selling everything and buying 'normal' 4.10's and a Tru-trac.

Where are you from? I've got a set of Rubicon gears I'd sell you.

The Ruby Gears Will Not Fit. The Ring Gear Bolts Are Bigger Threads
Then Any Other Carrier, Locker. The Thick Cut Gear Is Depper And Will Not Engage Properly.

I live in Tulsa, OK. How much would you want for one set of gears out of your rubicon?

What are you talking about? I am aware that the ring gear bolts are bigger but you can easily compensate for this by drilling out the carrier bolt holes with a drill press. The thing you said about the the gear cut being deeper doesn't make sense. The "thick" gear doesn't refer to the gear depth being deeper.

Thick Cut Gears Are Measured From The Mounting Surface, Ie Where
It Bolts To The Carrier To The Crown Of The Teeth. Ruby Lockers Are Made For This Extra Depth. A Standard Carrier/locker Is Not Cut For This. By Bolting On A Thick Cut Gear To A Standard Carrier
Ot Will Com Past The Nornal Engagement Area Of A Pinion.

I'm pretty sure they're trying to use the Rubi gears on the 3.55 and lower carrier. Essentially they are trying to keep from buying a new carrier for their Dana 44.

Does It Get Old Hitting The Shift Key For Every Word?

I've heard of the redrilling thing too, though I've not heard of any results from it, good or bad. Seems like it would make sense though.

This is what I am trying to do. I am going to use a high ratio carrier (3.73 and down numerically) not a normal low ratio carrier that is used when running a normal set of 4.10's. Has anybody heard of this working?

Yes. I'm running Rubicon 4.10 thick gears in a TJ (non-Rubicon) carrier bolted into my XJ Dana 44 housing. They seem to work OK.

The previous TJ owner had drilled the holes out to the required size.
