I am doing mini truck disc swap on a stock L/c axle. My question is how do you know or measure what thickness of shims to use on the upper and lower knuckels. Can I do it without any special tools??? Also I am looking for a set of cone washers, nuts, and washers off of a 84-85? toy. to complete my swap.

You can out even shims top & bottom (usually doesn't work & your seals wear & leak preamturely) & trial & error on preload or get a knuckle alignment tool ($100) & be done w/ it. there are a few guys who rent thiers out (john stone & others) for about $10 + shipping.

Jack,
How much is the knuckle SST? I have a few front ends to do between my FJ40, FJ55 and FJ45 and a few friends trucks to do eventually...

If you're using mini knuckles, check the part number of the SST before you order it.

I'm pretty sure the LC & mini tools are slightly different. I know they do have different part numbers.

Order the SST from OTC instead of from a dealer. Thats where the dealers get them from.

What does SST stand for?
I went on OTC's tools site and can't find the tool!
Thanks

SST means Special Service Tool. These are unique tools used for specific vehicle makes & models.

OTC (Owatana Tool Co.) makes them for most (if not all) the car manufacturers. I know this is where Toyota dealers get theirs from.

Look in the back of any Toyota FSM (Factory Service Manual). It will have a section with a table showing all the SST's required for that model. It will also show the part number. Get this part number, and CALL OTC. Just tell them you want availability and pricing on a Toyota SST. Give them the part number, and in about a minute you will know how much it is, and if its available. You can order it right then over the phone, too..... :D

I'll seee if I can dig up the phone number........

What year are the mini knuckles from that you are using?
What you need is called a Steering Knuckle Centering Gauge.
The part number for an 80 and an 84 mini is:
09634-60013

This is also the same number used on 81 FJ40-series and FJ60's. Also used for the BJ & HJ versions of the 40 & 60 series.

For a 74 FJ40, the number is: 09634-60012
