Drove down (near) Rubicon Springs Friday, what an adventure..

First on the drive up the engine started rattling, for some reason I thought it was an exhaust leak and kept driving until it heated up to 240 when I realized I had no oil pressure and had been driving on it that way for quite some time. Ooops..

Pulled over and called a buddy who brought me a couple quarts of oil. It fired up and sounded fine although it still did not register oil. Motored on to South Lake Tahoe where I picked up my Dad and we started in on the trail. My fuel pump has been whining since day one but as we were driving along near Miller lake I said "eventually that pump is just going to stop" and literally right after.. it did. Luckily I had a spare so I swapped it and drove on. I guess I pinched a hose so not much further after smelling fuel we checked it out and had to replace a fuel line. No big deal on we go. A few odd noises caused us to stop but we couldn't figure it out until the bottom of Cadillac where bam no power and.. no transfer case. It literally fell off, the aluminum coupler broke 3 of the 4 ears off on my 203/300 Northwest fab coupler and we were done!

Set up camp and first thing in the morning I pulled off the broken parts for a hike to town. Luckily some guys in a XJ drove by right then and gave us a ride. They were on their way to get parts for 2 of their rigs that were dead at the springs. Got back to tahoma and called for a ride. Called around and found a guy to weld the ears back on, and he did a nice job (pics to come).

I posted some pics up on my good ol facebook account and called a few friends but Mocha Mike came to the rescue since he was camping near by. He not only gave me and my dad a ride back but provided some killer manifold rito's and Tecate! You rock Mike!!

So we made good time back to my rig and I put in the doubler and hooked everything back up. Fired it up and we were off... for a bit. Right at that rock that keeps you from going down the hill I spit out a cap and destroyed my stub and inner shafts. A bit beat by now I just unlocked the hubs and kept going. "Practically" no more issues, my track bar busted off but that didn't stop me as I did finally drive out under my own power. Oh yea, one of my rear caliper pistons was leaking fluid as well as my power steering pump and since the adapter was welded some of the seals could not go back in right and it leaks so I need to fix that..

Shew, that was an eventful couple days. Other than those issues I was diggin the scout, out of all the rigs I've driven it feels the best. Got the front end mostly tore down and I am going to turn the knuckles (I have 16 degrees of caster) toss in another shaft and hit the trail again.

Ray told me what happened. Sorry to hear you had so many problems with your Scout. I am glad you took that other pump with you, we just talked last week on how that thing sounded like it was going to go out soon.

Even after seeing all that carnage, seeing pics of you camped in the Con makes me want to keep and build my Scout even more. :smokin:

Brandon, sorry that you had problems. Is this the first real 'wheeling trip since you got it "done" ? Even with the busted parts, it sounds like you had a good trip.

Which version of the NWF doubler do you have? Kyle mentioned that had updated the design, but it looks like yours is already the newer design.

Looks like you'll need to add another mount to take the stress off the adapter. The clocking feature is neat, but it's obviously a weak point. That's why I passed on getting the NWF doubler and ended up with an all steel Jed's doubler.

Brandon
08-23-2010, 07:10 AM
No regrets, had a great time! Yea, really the first wheeling trip in the rocks anyway.

Sent an email to NWF last night, will try to follow up with a phone call today. Curious to see what they say and yes, looking at ideas to support the 300, ideally to the 203. I don't think jeds makes one to a 300 but I'll have to look.

guidolyons

Yeah, I have a 203/205, I don't think Jeds has a 203/300 doubler....but I bet his Ford 6 bolt round pattern would bolt up, not sure about the 203 to 300 mid-shaft though.

Hmmm that new design does look beefier. The last time I looked they still had pics of the old style, but it's been a year or two since I had last looked.

You'll still want to add another crossmember and mount to support the D300.

Both knuckles are cut and free, where's the bible on what to use for caster? Guessing 5 degrees..

Waiting on the NWF parts so I can get it back out again..

Also looking at some chromo shafts, what's the dealio..

Looking at the Yukon shafts. Little tight on funds (ok very tight) but I don't have a spare shaft so at the least I'd like to get the short side stuff (dodge d44 length short side).

let's see, minor stuff...

Ordered new BJ's (ball joints). Ordered the XRF's or whatever based on a pirate search. Less than 100 bones shipped and they have good reviews so we'll see. Ditching my steering spacers and bolts so also ordered new knuckle studs. All the little needle bearings popped out of one of my spindles so I ordered a new bearing there, hoping that's not too much of a PIA to swap out..

New Brake MC, and what I thought was a leaky rear caliper was actually the rear axle about to slide out (loose) and oil coming out on the tire. Waiting for my new doubler still so the rig is still on jack stands for another weekend...

Oh yea, yukon doesn't make a short side dodge shaft so I need to find someone else that does, or someone that will custom cut a 17.1" long one..

Have a spare stocker with a new 760x ready to go in for now..

I always went 80 bottom. 40 adjuster, 120 top. You don't want that adjuster coming loose.

Brandon
09-11-2010, 07:55 PM

guidolyons

Probably depends on the ball joint mfg. Follow the torque specs that come on the little folded up piece of paper (instructions) that you threw in the trash :flipoff2:

IIRC, when I did a set of TRW(?) ball joints it was 80ft/lbs lower, 50ft/lbs adjuster, then 100ft/lbs on the upper nut.

binderbound
09-12-2010, 08:14 AM
I used spicer joints only and was taught by some crusty old timers.:D

The billavista link shows the adjuster at 70ftlbs. That seems high to me but if it says it.......

Brandon
09-12-2010, 08:31 AM
sorta seems to make sense to have the same torque top n bottom but who knows, my XRF's didn't come with any specs. Oh well, went with the billavista link..

Still haven't welded my C', trying to find something that tells how to tell how far out they should be based on a certain lenght axle. I built the axles a while back and it seems one is different than the other (shaft goes in further).

Is there a question here? Do you need some kind of measurement?

Brandon
09-16-2010, 08:32 AM
it's not rocket science, I can put a tape in the tube till it bottoms and measure to the center of the BJ's but I assume the shaft should not bottom, should be some sort of tolerance..

I dunno, I shoved em in and put the outers back on. Out of town for work right now but if it steers and turns without binding I'll weld it up.

Used a needle bearing for the pin, then ran into a few other issues. The 300 would not fully seat. According to the directions I cut the mainshaft but that did nothing. Ended up grinding out about a quarter inch of the inner splines on the 203. Finally got it back together though (thanks Jeremy). Got my track bar welded back on and am ready to roll again.. finally.

Also took out my spacers on my steering arms, used to have bolts and I went back to studs.

He used to take me coon hunting in it and his family said he would want me to have it. It's been sitting unprotected since 1975 and it's in pretty rough shape. It's all there though and that I'm glad about. First thing I need to know is the year model. Serial # FC 15188. built the "outriggers" but didn't get them on, got all 4 built but will get em on eventually. Trying to find some sort of rubber or bushing that is the same thickness as my body mount bushings before I set the height and weld em on.
