: LR power steering boost

Here is a pic of the mods needed to boost your Power steering pressure. I am not here to debate if this is a safe mod, or if the pump can handle it etc. If you have something bad to say, Fawk you. This is a tech post, and I will answer any questions relating to the tech side of things.

This is still in the experimental stages, but is very similar to mods made to saginaw pumps every day. Caution should be taken when increasing pressure, because you can easily blow seals or potenitaly blow caps of the box etc. This can easily kill you if you do not take care.

When pressing the plug into the pressure valve, smaller movements are more desirable. Large movements will make huge changes in performance. 1/32" should increase your pump more than you really need.

If this works, I will buy you dinner in LC, and have Pendy do whatever you want after. :D But seriously, this is what I need. Can you give some more detail so us simple minded folks can do it?

Which pump was this performed on? I think the '95 RRC had a better pump than my wimpy '90 model. Not sure how these are compared with the Disco's and D's.

Sounds good. I have been considering building a bracket for an AGR pump or something similar. What kind of increase do you think your seeing with this mod?

I did the same thing to my pump and it worked for a while.. In fact it worked great! I have done the same (well similar thing) to Saginaw pumps for years and eventually you learn the limits...
In this case (Rover)I am not sure if the pump just wore out or if the extra pressure did it in, but it is pretty unhappy now.. I'm not going to follow up as the mass production of brackets for Canned ham Pumps on Rover motors is in full swing... The Saginaw pump will probably deliver in stock form all the Rover Box can handle... Of course I guess I'll have to see just how far we can go with this too..:).. Anyone have a spare steering box?

It seems like I saw some on eBay just recently. Pretty Cheap too!

I have one. Don't need no stinkin' steering box anymore. Got Hydro?

you don't have hydro yet fawker :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Hope that you got a hold of that guy for the arms. Maybe next week you can say that :flipoff2:

Interesting tech. What is the main reason behind this mod? Extra pressure for powering hydro-assist or a hydro winch, or just improving steering force for offroad?

Yes. Both. A little more pressure (assuming your box can handle it) will make steering a little easier. Plus if you wanted a small Ram Assist setup this "might" work without changing to another PS pump.

Rumor has it our steering box is "Ripe" for tapping for Hydro Assist.

Can't you also adjust the valving inside the box to give lighter steering with the same hydraulic pressure? Of course this wouldn't effect the total amount of the force that the hydraulics can exert to move the wheels (unlike the mod shown above).

We should be able to infinatly increase the pressure, but I am laying down a temporary limit of 1500PSI. Though I have no way of accuratly setting this pressure right now. The pump should be able to handle in excess of 2500PSI (burst pressure). The pump originally had around 800-900PSI. This mod slightly increases flow rate and pressure. You can use these mods to help with large tires, Hydro Assist, And full hydro. This pump is modded for full hydro. As for modding the steering box, I do not think that you will gain anything. And , as for tapping the steering box for hydro asisst, that also is very very easy, a Monkey could do it.

This mod can be done on any LR power steering pump as far as i know, The trick, is simply pressing the plug in. Saginaws have screw on ends that you can remove shims on instead of the pressed plug. It is simply a different approach, with the same effect.

So with that, lets see how many people can blow up there pumps.

After Cruces, I'll try blowing mine up. :D

All I know is with the locker on in the front and the UJ's I can be pulling on the wheel with everything I got and barely budge it. I need a cheap fix, I am not ready for hydro assist. I hope this works. You did this for Bill right? So it was a standard 300TDi pump?

I did it on my D-90 a month ago. So we now have two trucks here.

There is an easier way than this to tap the box for Hydro assist. Drill out the bleader bolt in the top housing for one line then the steel line that runs around the outside of the box can be cut and T'd into for the other line. This can all be done without even removing the box.

"T" into the little high pressure line?

Are you using the stock pulley on your pump?

Yes Stock Pulley. I run a 8x1.50 Ram that has been shortened to 7" of Stroke. It could do with a smaller Pulley however.
