I did not know how to word this in the search

I have a detroit tru-trac in a D-30 and Detroit No-slip in the rear 44.
I want to swap out the tru-track ( limit slip) for simple lock-rite locker in the front.

I got the D-30 with the Tru-track alrerady in it, so I dont know what is missing or was swapped in.

Anybody know what alteration were done to a D-30 to install a the true-trac?

What will i need to install a lock rite?
is there an easier locker to go with if anything is missing due to the tru trac install?

TIA...sorry for newbie D-30 question

There should not be anything missing. The Lock Rite drops into the stock open carrier, so it will not work in the tru trac carrier. You will need to get a stock open carrier to install in place of the tru trac before installing the lock rite. You should get new carrier bearings and shims for setting up the backlash.
Because of swapping out the whole carrier, there is nothing easier other than leaving the tru trac in place.
You should be able to sell the tru trac to recover some expenses.

agreed with Robert, but if you want an easier alternitive(if you have the funds) replace the Tru-Trac with a Detroit soft locker, it basicly slides right where the Tru-trac was..I hope this makes sense

if you have the money i would recamened puting in a ARB, it would be alot easier on all the parts than the lock right or detroit.

Find someone that will buy your true trac and also give you their open diff. I wouldn't reccomend an ARB ...you don't want to throw anymore money into that thing than necessary.

Damn, I am really slipping. :rainbow: You have the single most correct answer. I would not swap anything out. Just leave that Tru Trac right where it is. That puny little D30 is not worth even the labor involved with swapping out the carrier, let alone spending any money on it.

the dana 30 is a good axle for moderate wheelin and tire sizes. I wouldn't spend the money to buy an open diff/lockrite or full detroit setup if a true trac is already in there. just learn to use the true trac. the true trac will work better if you free up all the available flex in the front end. get longer shocks, unhook the swaybar, get some superflex control arms, etc.
full lockers are very hard on axleshafts, and depending if yours have the smaller 260x ujoints, you will probably snap them too with a locker
