: Check out my valentines GIFT
Cliffy [JD] 02-14-2002, 03:18 PM I've wanted this for awhile now. It's made of a heavy canvas; yeah canvas like stuff I could make a custom soft top out of

So guess what's next, I'm thinking of getting a half-cab and cutting out the back window, not using the bulkhead, and covering the back half of the tub with a custom soft top. I should be able to do it for like under a hundred dollars EASY!!!
Cliffy [JD] 02-14-2002, 03:20 PM Sorry about the size I'll shrink those down really quick.:(
jdjanda 02-14-2002, 03:21 PM Nice, I hope the wife gives me two red X's today
I know you're working on it

Are yu going to fix this or are you just going to sit and wait for Old Scout to come along and smack you down. :flipoff2:

Screw you and Old scout i got it;) :flipoff2:
Cliffy [JD] 02-14-2002, 03:28 PM See all it takes is BEER:beer:
JoshC 02-14-2002, 03:28 PM That is nice. My brother-in-law is a Chef and carries his knives in a similar case.
Cliffy [JD] 02-14-2002, 03:31 PM I'm also gonna have her make me one for my screwdrivers and pliers. This way it's not a hassel to take all of my tools on the trail. It carries all the wrenches I need and it's lightweight, not like my craftsman toolbox.

Cut up a Traveltop instead. They're easier to find and the back will already be open after you cut it. You could also make it as long or short as you want it.
I like the way Makkat did his with a "three-quarter cab"..

Traveltop???? What does that look like again??
I was going to use the halfcab, because if I took the window out the surrounding metal would have some substance to it and not be all flimsy. In other words I wouldn't have to reinforce it.
Otherwise I'd just use my top.
PS: I'm not to fond of Makkat's top. It's not a very smooth transition with the cut right in the front half of the window area.

Makkat cut his at the angle because there's a stiffener in the top right where he cut it. He didn't want to cut it just in front of the stiffener.
I think the bottom was cut where it was cut because that's where the bolt hole was, and where the back seat ends.
It works pretty well. I didn't hear it rattling or flopping around at all, and even when we were driving in the rain I only got wet from rain bouncing off the rear deck and coming into the cab from the back. Wasn't even all that cold.
There should be a stiffener just behind the doors which would make a good spot to cut it. I haven't looked at my steel top in a long time, but I bet there's a good spot to cut it for what you want without really needing to reinforce anything.
Makkat used some rubber "edging" (like we've discussed for cut fender lips before) to cut down on the quantity of shredded clothing and bleeding arms from the cut metal.
There was also a red Scout II I saw at RMIHR '98 and Nationals '98 (he won the winch at RMIHR and had it mounted by Nationals).
He cut a Traveltop starting just behind the front seats/doors and then sloped it at an angle back.
Kind of like "Razor-backs" on a standard cab pickup, or like a "fast-back" pickup cab.
he then had a custom tonneau made that covered the bed *and* snapped up the sides.
Sort of like the "short" soft-tops you see on half-cab Blazers.
Cliffy [JD] 02-15-2002, 03:50 PM That was my first thought, but I don't want to drop my headliner just to find out that there's not proper support where I'd like to have the cut.
Also isn't there more sheet metal behind the driver and pass. windows on the half cabs then there is on the traveltops? I'm not too fond of the small amount on the traveltops.
Cliffy [JD] 02-15-2002, 03:52 PM In that picture I "added" metal to make it look good here's what the origional looks like.
tsm1mt 02-15-2002, 05:16 PM If there's more, it's not by much. They're pretty darn squared off.
If you have a "fast-back" Terra top in mind.. those are Fiberglass and would require you to use the rounded Terra/Traveler door glass.
RustoleumWhite 02-15-2002, 06:19 PM ya know you *could* take a travel top, wack out the center, and splice it together.... use the ass end grafted to the front half. Add a little metal if you want to give your self an "extended" cab.
I actually plan on doing somehting simular. I have a "rought" 1/2 cab, and a recently aquired full top that the rear half is trash.... plan (in the future) is to combine the two into a "sligthly" longer 1/2 cab. More room for gear in the cab. I don't care much for the terra tops (like the steel 1/2 cab look better).
just ANOTHER progect in line..... for now it will be the standard 1/2 cab..

There is a support member right in front of where you made the "cut". I cut mine back further so the rear seat passengers would have more protection than cutting it where you plan. I have actually had a few people ride in the back during rain and snow storms, they mainly get wet from whatever bounces off the tire. That top was one of those temporary things that ended up lasting a couple of years.:D
The original plan was to have a soft top or canvas top made for the rear area like you are planning, but I decided to just build up the 800 instead. Fawk the passengers!:flipoff2:

Well that's good to know. I do like the idea of "grafting" the front half and a small portion of the rear together, let's see how that looks.
I would say FAWK the passengers but the passenger would be my daughter, soo I don't think so.
Cliffy [JD] 02-16-2002, 01:19 PM I think that looks really good:beer: :usa:
tsm1mt 02-16-2002, 02:37 PM I took some pictures of the underside of one of my spare steel tops.. I'll try to post 'em later.
Like Makkat said.. there's a support rib right behind the doors..
tsm1mt 02-16-2002, 05:43 PM Lower left is the door opening, to the right is the quarter glass.

Here you see the front windshield area, the door opening, and the first stiffener.

This was *supposed* to pick up the rear stiffener, where Makkat cut, but it didn't turn out too well..

And just 'cuz I had the camera out at the same time..
We did a tune-up on "Oscar" today.. amazing what a cap, rotor, and plugs will do for ya. :D
Pulled it into the new garage.. fired up the propane heater.. ahhhh...

Cliffy [JD] 02-17-2002, 01:26 PM Yeah that support would work perfectly. Thanks for the pic.
But I think I like the look of the angled back better than a flat back. What do you guys think??
Well at least this info gives me some options.:usa:

I like the sloped back as well.
Like I said - there's a guy running around with a "fast-back" chopped Traveltop with a custom soft-top on it. The top arches down and back a lot like you'll find on a half-cab Blazer top.
